I help fix up computers for locals occasionally, but lately they have been coming back to me complaining about the latest Windows update v1607!!
Some of these people are pensioners and have little resources, so that when their internet dongles suddenly chew up mounds of data, that cost them, they wonder why? "Why cannot we defer updates like before"?
I can't even do this myself, as the new version has removed the setting, or at least hidden it somewhere?
Unless it's been changed recently, W10's metered setting only works on wireless connections. If you're on wired, there's a registry hack that did work.
Can also set update service to disabled.
Ok well, the devices used/sold by Optus and Telstra here in Australia are not coming up as "wireless", even though they are USB insertable. They are described, at least on my Win10 laptop, as an Ethernet device!!
My beef is, whatever the connection, end users should be able to "defer updates" like in previous versions.
Hi, we use a little executable that disables windows update service and also allows you to enable it, includes a few other modifications, very simple it is used among nursing homes.
I have zipped it up for you, just run the zip and then double click the returned executable.(perfectly safe)
I did one lady's laptop yesterday, put a link to services on the desktop, and showed her to disable Windows Updates, or enable if she is in data heaps area.
