I'm looking to buy my sister some sort of tablet or mini-laptop for Christmas, whichever is better suited for using in the kitchen to reference recipes and possibly YouTube videos. She cooks for us a lot and is always stuck scrolling through her tiny iPhone with her oily fingers. I've seen some devices that cator to just that --kitchen use, but I'd like to be pointed in the right direction. Possibly with a stand so it can stay planted somewhere on the countertop while she's cooking.
Nothing too extravagant. My budget is 150-200$ at the moment, which is know is silly but don't hesitate to suggest devices out of that range; if I feel compelled I just may go the extra mile. It would truly be a great gift.
Hi, price range would be a help here, generally I would say look at Samsung as they are usually very reliable, I would avoid the real cheap ones. Asus are making some with a reasonable price point. Computers & Tablets, Tablets, All Tablets, Android - Newegg.com
i would probably say a laptop is not going to be very good - as the kitchen tends to be wet and dirty - and if that gets into all the keyboard - it wont last long
although there are machines with a water resistant keyboard
i would say a tablet would be best -
but again not sure how they will last with the "wet" elements - wet hands etc
you maybe able to pickup an older ipad , if its only going to be used in the kitched - look and see what the apps are she may use - if its just using the internet - that maybe a solution
Otherwise the Samsung range is very good and sometimes they are under offer at very good prices
if she already has an iphone - then maybe an ipad would be the way to go - as its will operate the same way
Hard to imagine a mere $99 for a HP 7" tablet running Windows 8. And an 8" at $149. About time someone came up with something to try and stem the tide to Chromebooks.
i'm sure they do at a few $ as well as the subscription to office will also be a few $
The subscription to Office 365 personal is £60 in UK on its own
$69.99 in US
If you want a tablet that may survive kitchen usage, look at kids tablets. They tend to be a bit more survivable when it comes to drops, spills, and greasy fingers.
yes, she does have an iphone and has had one since the iphone 4 so thats whats compelling me to go with an ipad. i know she will like the ipad most since she will know her way around it (she's already used one). the problem is that ipads are expensive, not waterproof and i would still need some sort of stand for her to use it effortlessly while baking/cooking.
edit: scracth that. the cheapest ipad is the mini and its 247$.. more than I wanna spend. non-apple it is. atleast the good news is now my options are not limited. between 100-150$ what can i get
ok thanks.. i think ill just pick any one from that link that has the features i think she may need. im just worried about the learning curve with android.. she's not very adapt with tech
i checked out the tablets on newegg canada using the same criteria as used in your link joe but the cheapeast is 200$ something.. at this point ill take anything that's just fast, android and between 100-150$
ok. thanks for that. i had a look and think that a big part of this is seeing the tablet and feeling it so i think ill just go to best buy and take a look
Yup, always best to get hands on first, you don't have to buy it from the store.
I could not recall the size you mentioned so you got from 7" to 10" in the listings.
The 7" are cheaper in most cases.
