Make sure mobile network is on.
Also, when I used to have my Droid 1, mobile network was only available when my battery cover was securely on. The antenna for the Droid 1 went through the metal in the battery cover. I have no idea if Motorola changed this in the Droid 2 or the Droid 3.
If you just got this phone, why do you not just take it into a Verizon store? If they can't fix it, they'll have to give you a new one..
