XP - Vista networking problem

I have two computers a vista laptop and an xp desktop. They both connect to the internet fine, through a Belkin_G_Plus_MIMO_93D193.

Problem is that they refuse to see each other.

They will ping each other most of the time. They are both in the same workgroup. They both have sharing enabled. They both have some shared folders or drives. I have both of the Link-Layer protocols checked in Wireless Network Connection Properties in Vista.

I also ran the sp3 update program on the xp and it didn't take the first time or the 2nd time. The vista has two of the link-layer protocols, while the xp only has the responder one that I installed and I have it checked. I can't find the I/O one for XP. When I click on network on the vista the xp comes up but when I click on it I get error 0x80070035, which has something to do with the path not being good.

On the xp when I click on Entire network I only get the shared folders from itself.

Some place I read that you should have the same user name for both computers?? Could someone give me a list of things to check and/or some advice on how to do this?

Thank you
David in Sonora CA

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Ping works both ways. I changed a few to automatic. The vista sees the xp but doesn't "know the path." But the xp doesn't see the vista at all, except for ping. I have shared practically every thing I have. Plus I had disabled the fire wall on both. Obviously, I have over looked some thing. Or is it that vista doesn't play well with others. In the meantime I'll check everything again to be sure there isn't something that I have missed.
Oh yea, I created a new acct on the vista to match the user name, but that didn't help.
Thanks to JohnWill for the long response.

For each computer, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The problem you had there was you didn't have the share permissions set correctly on the vista machine so that accounts on the XP machine could access the folders.

The error message this guy is getting is completely different and seems to be a network connection issue and not a permission issue.

I also tried pinging using the names of the computers. That did not work. The names are xp = dgr1, vista = dgrjazz-toshiba.

Now here's what is interesting it worked once one way. Then I tried the other way. But then I tried it with 2nd and it worked, but the first way would not. Then neither would work at all

Also the guy after you said the thing about having the two computers having the same user name with the same password. You mentioned that also. I tried to create a user with the same name and I got nowhere. Also is there any inherent danger in just simply changing the name of the primary acct to match the other? I fear losing every thing and not having access to it, which is why I created a name user name. Thanks again for your help.

OK, the problem is that your Vista machine has the wrong node type.

Start | Run | regedit.

Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

If either of the following values are present, delete them:

NodeType;
DhcpNodeType.

Reboot and post another IPCONFIG /ALL from that machine.

Thank you so far it is working. The only prob is that the firewall has to be disabled. I have Trend Micro which has a trust / not trust function for computers and routers it sees and I have each one trusting the other. Even with that when I enable the firewall the computers on the network will not see one another. User name and PW is still different. Also the IP address has changes for the computers. 192.168.2.2 has become 192.168.2.3 the router is the same as before.

Here is the info for the Vista then the XP
