Hello TSF
Currently I have a V1000H Actiontec router setup in my basement where my breaker panel is etc etc. I am facing a problem where I cannot squeeze out even 1 MBit of download from a portion of my house. After a few minutes of hard thinking (I mean a month of this problem)...I concluded that my room/my living room is between my water boiler and my router (Giant steel portion) causing a disruption. Walking 3 steps down my hall gives me my fixed plan @ a 13MBit speedtest but sitting down or lying in bed would give me something like .01-0.7 down and .95 up (Maximum upload). Looking through my router options, my downstream dBm is at 18 and my upstream is at 3 (I am assuming it is interference).
What is a possible fix to the problem? Buying an external antennae with an extension and putting it in front of my boiler?
Extra notes -
Changed channels
Messed with MSDU and MDPU aggregation
Wireless power @ 100%
Currently @ channel 9
WPA2 with AES encryption
20 MHZ channel width
WMM enabled
Router near the corner of house in basement
I would do that but
1: I have all 3 services running with that router
2: The ethernet/TV cable is too short (Only a few inches sticking out of wall)
3: There is no flat surface to put my router on top of.
Router location needs to be improved and what services its running doesn't matter. You have physical location issue.
#2 You could put a hub there and then patch cable to where ever you place the router. Or put a outlet end on the existing cable and patch whatever length you want from there.
#3 You can't mount a shelf unit somewhere higher than the h2o heater?
I would kindly suggest you don't think yourself into a box.
Yeah I do that quite often when there is an issue I cannot resolve without someone else's help.
I actually require my router to be sitting in my cable box though. If I change it's location to my living room for example, I would have no phone services, TV services and no connection because the router serves as a modem too *Hence the reason I was thinking about buying a cheap and quick-fix solution to my problem*
Another note:
I have achieved my theoretical max speed (13 MBits) upstairs before, it just seems the power output now provides jaw dropping slow speeds.
I do have 14 ping to my local speedtest servers so I don't think it is a packet dropping issue.
Breaker boxes and electric motors interfere with wifi. Your solution is to relocate the router. Since its dsl all you need to do is run a telephone line from the present location to where ever you wish to place it. Real easy to take the present line and put it into a outlet box. Run a regular phone line cable from there to where ever and you will have better reception with no loss of anything.
Here are a few pictures to demonstrate what I meant by "I can't really relocate my modem/router"

I am pointing at 2 wires. The white ethernet is an easy fix - just find a longer cable. The black one however is the tricky part. That cable runs through our house giving us IPTV so say goodbye to TV if I remove that. There is also one more ethernet that is connected (My computer is currently using that one). Unless purchasing a switch is part of the plan I think I would like to leave that placement as it is :ermm:

Well...it is located in a small steel cage. This is just a general idea on how it looks like.

This is where the problem lies. This giant boiler/filter system blocks internet access to one half of the house. Unfortunately this is also the half part of the house which uses the most wireless internet.
@Wanderer's sentences
"Since its dsl all you need to do is run a telephone line from the present location to where ever you wish to place it (This would be easiest if I didn't have Telus's other services). Real easy to take the present line and put it into a outlet box (As in the ethernet/phone jacks in my wall?). Run a regular phone line cable from there to where ever and you will have better reception with no loss of anything.(This is very true. Moving it without having to rewire or purchase something would prove a difficult task though)"
Once upon a time, I did a series of speedtests side-by-side. The results were as follows http://puu.sh/4FeOA.png
Got a ton of school work. Couldn't load google on my laptop. Made a makeshift directional antennae with card stock and aluminum foil and voila 5-7MBit download.
