TP-Link USB Adapter working with laptop, but not desktop.

So I just move to the UK and it's going to take two weeks to get my internet set up. My landlord gave me the password for his WiFi for the meantime. All my devices have connected no problem, except for my desktop. I have never use WiFi on my desktop, as I have always had a wired connection. I bought this adapter as I didn't want to spend much on something that I was going to use for such a sort amount of time.

So, I went to their site on my laptop, downloaded the driver (made sure I picked the right version (v2)) and installed it. I choose not to install their program with it, but after it didn't work I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with their program, and no change. I can see the network that I want to connect to, and made sure the security was set up the same (WPA2 AES) which I grabbed from my laptop. I thought maybe I got a bum piece of equipment, so I tried it on my laptop, and it works just fine.

I got the WiFi inspector and it shows a solid steady signal from the router. When I try to connect it just says "Windows was unable to connect to EE-BrightBox-xxxxxx"

Problem computer is running Windows 7 - Laptop Windows 8. I've never had a third party antivirus, just Windows Defender. I also disabled Windows Firewall hoping that would help. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers several times - even trying to manually install from the correct folder.

Help me Tech Support - You're my only hope!

So this morning I updated my desktop to the latest BIOS and made sure that my WLAN AutoConfig service was running. No change. Still sees the network perfectly, but unable to connect. I even tried all the other versions of the driver that came in the download.

Not sure if it helps, but this is the ipconfig when the adapter is connected to the laptop, and working properly.

So after a little more investigation I found that I can connect to my phone's mobile hot spot, so there must be some kind of problem between the router and my desktop for some strange reason. I don't have access to the router itself because it is in my landlord's place, but I just got an email that my broadband will be here by Thursday instead of two weeks, so I guess I can just go desktopless until then unfortunately.

Not sure if I can really mark it solved, but you can delete it if you wish.

Well I just woke up to an email this morning from my new ISP that says I won't get my modem until the 10th now, so I'm back at troubleshooting this.

I got the login for the router, and have been trying a few things. I manually added my computer via reserved ip. Putting the mac address for my adapter in, as well as making sure I created a static ip on my adapters setting, restarted the modem, and I still can't connect to this damn thing! Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Okay, so final update from me!

After I had exhausted almost all my options, I decided to try to change the channel that the wireless router was broadcasting on. It was on 1, and the only other network in range was on 6, so I didn't really think to mess with this before. I changed it to 2 and my desktop connected immediately. It connected to the network, but had limited access and the internet was not working properly. I changed it to channel 11 and it seemed to work, but very slowly. Earlier in my troubleshooting process I had noticed that my adapter had an option under Configure -> Advanced -> Bandwidth for 20MHz, or 20-40MHz, and I had also seen that on the routers WiFi options. By default my adapter was set to 20-40, and the router was set to 20. I set the router to 20-40 on Channel 11 and now I have nice steady, fast connection on my desktop!

Hopefully this thread may be of some help to someone in the future. Good luck!
