[SOLVED] No Internet/ Ethernet Drivers After XP reinstall

I recently wiped my dell dimension 4550 clean due to the fact that it was given to me. I reinstalled win XP home and now have question marks beside Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio controller, and PCI Input Device under the device manager. It shows that my Network adaptor is the 1394 Net Adapter. I have tried ipconfig and all it shows is Windows IP Configuration. no address or anyhting else. I am my ISP is Comcast with a cisco DPC3000 modem but they did not give me any drivers for this product. I have searched the dell website to find the drivers but am not really sure what i am looking for once i key in my service tag. Please Help I do have internet connection through my laptop which is a macbook and everything i load and transfer either doesn't have setup files or wont run properly on the dell unless i have internet acess.

you will need the drivers for various devices, network, audio, video etc
Did you get a dell driver CD with the machine as well as the XP recovery CD - ?

Post your service Tag Number here , and we can look up the drivers for you
also post an image of device manager - see below
As there can be different hardware for the same device on the website to identify the hard ware do this

Under Property - drop down
Select hardware ids
Right click and select all.
Then right click again and select copy.
Copy and paste that here.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >

start > control panel> System and Security> Device Manager

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Ok, as for the PCI vendor I am not sure that the information i am putting in is correct. The vendor ID on my system looks nothing like the ones listed on the web page. I tried different variations of what was under my ID List and nothing was found. I have attached screen shots of all the drivers with problems and the listing under the hardware ID. Also the network adapter. The tag # is BRJT421 and as for the driver CD, this computer was given to me with only the Win XP SP2 disc version 2002. I think I have covered all the information you requested. thanks again for your help.

Looking at the first ethernet diagram - from PCI = intel
i would install this driver

1394 is a firewire adapter - so we can ignore that for now - used for cameras etc not usual for networking

Multimedia Audio - is creative soundblaster - and the driver is listed for audio here

Yes the information you have is correct. As for the chipset i tried to install that last night and it would not give me the option to save it to a file so that i could transfer it from one computer to another. Also when clicking on the links you have posted i am getting error messages.

On Another note: This might be a dumb question but i do have a registered copy of Win 7 and a driver disc that came with my HP Laptop. If I installed that on my dell as an upgrade would that work or are the drivers only compatible to the HP?

When you go to the Dell support site, enter your Service Tag Number and download the drivers. Be sure to use IE and do not use the Dell Download Manager!

Just download the driver file, save it to a flash drive and double click to install on the Dell

sorry some of those links dont seem to work again - maybe its not possible to link into the dell site that far - Although the LAN link worked

goto the support page Welcome to Home User Support enter the service tag number and then choose from there

there is only one intel driver for network and only one for soundblaster audio and only one for chipset

The driver disk will be for HP hardware on the PC
AND
what do you mean by registered - if already in use you cannot use on another PC - and it maybe an OEM upgrade
Also the DELL maynot work on windows 7 and have NO drivers for the hardware anyway

I just downloaded the chipset OK - file name is R47822.exe

did you download and installl the LAN driver - that way at least you can get on the internet with the machine

Confusious say I'm an idiot. I click on the download link and it automatically asks me to install. no option for saving file
ARG!! How do I use IE instead of the download manager.

clicked on the driver and it sent me straight to the installation utility page there is a download button and a button to add to my download list. and it gives the description of the driver

does it make a difference that the computer i am running internet on right now is running win 7? COuld this be why it is taking me directly to the install page even if i am clicking on the driver itself and not the quick install page? i have also attached my browser info if this makes a difference... not sure

Something goofy with that pc . . can you try a different one? I have downloaded hundreds of Dell drivers using Windows 7 and IE . . nary a problem yet

ok got it to load. Restarting comp now from install. Had to go to dell support and have them send me another link to load it from.. stupid HP comuters...Glad i have a mac comming..lol

How are you connecting to modem/router - cable / wireless

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste
