OS drive died.
replaced with new ssd
installed win7 64 - install went fine.
installed motherboard drivers(p8z68) no probs

only flags in device manager are:
PCI Simple Communications Controller- I think this is the onboard 56k modem
Unknown Device - no idea what this is
Video Controller - I think this is the gpu(vpu) that's built into the cpu. I'm using a gtx580 that's working fine with the latest and greatest driver from nvidia.

After I did the reinstall, everything SEEMED to be fine, but for some reason now the internet doesn't work. There's a yellow icon on the network icon in the system tray. When I open the N&SC, there's a red x on the line the runs between the house and the globe

I read the pre-requisites for posting here, and I believe I have all the info mentioned in that thread.

This is a wired connection. My ISP is Cablevision. I have the highest speed they offer which is called Ultra 50. It's just a regular cable connection. The modem is an arris tm802g

For what it's worth, the diagnostic says that the problem is the inability to contact the dns server. I swapped cables, no change. I'm using an ancient laptop to write this - connected to the same modem, and the internet works fine. But when I move the cable to my desktop - nothing.

free beers to whoever get me online again!!!:thumb:

Re: New os drive - now no internet! WHAT?!

The latest version for my operating system from your link is the exact same driver that is currently installed now. That's actually where I got it from too. LOL But, just to be on the safe side, I pulled in another 1, ran it, and it didn't give me an option to install it. Instead, it gave me the options to either modify or remove. So I removed it, then reinstalled it, rebooted, and it's still doing the exact same thing. OH well. Any other ideas? PLEASE say yes LOL

Re: New os drive - now no internet! WHAT?!

Lets try something . .

Disable IPv6 adaptors and see if the problem is still there:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
3. In the View your active networks area, click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
4. On the Networking tab, clear the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) check box, and then click OK.

Or use the Microsoft Fixit apps here:

Re: New os drive - now no internet! WHAT?!

Seems like that did the trick, rich. The connection doesn't seem as fast as it was previously, but at least you got me back online. Now I gotta tweak it and then reinstall all my programs. Thank you so much for your time and effort. Give me your paypal address and I'll happily throw a few bucks your so you can go and get a cold one on me.
