Hello everyone, I am hoping this is the correct place for this question..

I got a brand new HP Pavilion dv7-6c20us laptop yesterday. I brought it with me to a buddies house last night, and it was working just fine.

When I got it home today, I set up the Internet connection and everything seemed fine. I started up a downloader for a video game (Diablo 3) and saw the DL speed climb up to the usual 800-850kb/s that im used to seeing on my desktop PC. It slowly started to decrease in speed, though.. All the way down to 80 bytes/s.. and then it stopped. The icon in the lower right side of my screen told me that I had a Limited Access(?) connection.. i then diagnosed the problem.. and it repaired it saying that "The Connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and ther internet is broken" I thought that it could be just because i was upstairs, and my router was downstairs... it should still be within range.. but i couldnt think of anything else. So i moved downstairs and i got it again sitting 5 feet away from the router.

It stays connected and then for no reason at all it just dissapears..or loses the connection.. when instructed it will repair it.. only to have it happen moments later.. I just tried surfing the internet without having the downloader for the game going and it took longer, but it still happened 5-10 minutes later.

For the time being, I just plugged the laptop in directly to the modem.. kinda ruins the point of a laptop though, you know!

My Router says "NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless Router WNR834B..and I have a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem - SB5101n

Any replies and help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to TSF,

Are you using a wireless utility that controls your wireless connection or your Windows native wireless (WLAN Auto config)?

Please start here and provide as much information as you can to further assist you.

Thanks for the information provided, ipconfig /all output looks good no issue there.

There's an interference according from your Xirrus snap shot, your neighbors are using Channel 6, the same Channel as yours. Let's change your wireless channel to 1. Do you know how to do this? It will require you to access your router's control panel, you will need the logon credentials as well.

I didnt get it changed to 1, because later i saw there was a connection also using 1.. but i definately changed it from 6 to a number that would show no interference. I am still getting the error though.. along with "the default gateway is not available" i beleive.

Next thing that you will need to do is secure your network, no security means risk and others able to utilize a free wi-fi coming from your network. I'd suggest to use WPA2, you will need to reconnect your computer and other wireless devices in your network and make sure to type the pass-phrase correctly in order to be successfully connected to your network.

Restart your computer then tap F8 then select Safe Mode with Networking, see if your issue persist using this mode?

Next task for you to do is go to Realtek's site and download the driver for your Wi-Fi adapter.

If updating the driver didn't help, try disabling the Power Management of your wireless adapter from Device Manager by unchecking all the boxes.

Another update will be appreciated.

i followed the above steps.. i could not find what i was looking for on the realtek site so i went on HP's site and updated the realtek driver that way.

I went ahead and disabled the power management of the adapter as well.

sadly, still no luck. it remains the same.

I did find some discussion about the included adapter being "faulty" and the realtek manufacturer failing to admit/address the problem/defect whatever you would like to call it.

seems i have tried several options, and i greatly appreciate the help.. im just thinking that there cant be that many things left to try, correct?

Well, Wi-Fi adapters are now very reasonable, perhaps it's time to buy a new one.

Something with high gain antenna like this one would work, it also comes with 9dBi high gain antenna.
