"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

Hey guys, thanks so much for reading.

I've been having an issue with my PC since yesterday around 12 hours ago the internet cut out seemingly randomly and I've been getting this error. My PC and one other are connected to the network and both cannot connect to the internet.

I have the error ("Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.) when I try to connect both via wireless and ethernet.

Is there anything you can do? I'm a bit of a computer klutz but I'll do anything to try and get my internet up again. Thanks a lot!

Re: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

My PC and one other are connected to the network and both cannot connect to the internet.
probably a router or modem issue

do a powercycle - see below

Whats the make and model of the router you have - do you have a separate modem ?
Whats the status of all the lights on the router / modem

------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router
  • Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
  • Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes. We have found in some instances you need to wait at least 15 minutes
  • Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
  • First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

Re: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

Hey Etaf, thanks for your reply.

I tried doing a power cycle yesterday when I googled the issue and it had no effect. Just tried the process again, leaving everything off for 20 minutes and rebooting as instructed but no dice, it's still the same.

My router brand is TP-Link, I'm not sure the model number because the writing is in korean (I live in Korea) but I think it's TL WR841N.

The modem is a KT olleh modem, no mention of a model on the hub.

Thanks again for your help,

Kimarah.

Re: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

Can you connect a PC directly to the modem with a cable
you will need to do a powercycle each time you change the connection

see if that works on the modem alone

as asked
Whats the status of all the lights on the router / modem

Re: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

Hey again,

The lights on the router look fine, internet is flashing as connected and connection to lan ports are bright. Here is a link to a picture:

As suggested I tried plugging the PC directly into the wall and the internet works perfectly. I guess it's a problem with the router I'll have to address?

Thanks for your help.

Re: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

The wireless light is not on

But, i suspect you are connected to the router by cable as i can see two LAN connections made 1,2

have you tried resetting the router to factory settings ?

should be a button or hole on the back to reset

user guide here
May help

do you have a wireless device at all ?
maybe worth trying wireless if possible - see if that works

300Mbps Wireless N Router TL-WR841N - Welcome to TP-LINK

WPS/RESET: This button is used for both WPS and Reset function. To use the WPS function, press it for less than five seconds; to use the RESET function, press it for more than five seconds.
 Used as RESET button:
There are two ways to reset to the Router's factory defaults:
1) Use the Factory Defaults function on System Tools -> Factory Defaults page in the Router's Web-based Utility.
2) Use the WPS/RESET button: With the Router powered on, press and hold the WPS/RESET button (more than 5 seconds) until the SYS LED becomes quick-flash from slow-flash. Then release the button and wait the Router to reboot to its factory default settings.
 Used as WPS button:
If you have client devices, such as wireless adapters, that support Wi-Fi Protected Setup, then you can press this button to quickly establish a connection between the Router and client devices and automatically configure wireless security for your wireless network.
 WIFI ON/OFF: This switch is used to enable/disable the Router’s wireless function.

Re: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

After doing the factory reset the internet light doesn't show as getting internet. I suspect there may be a hardware issue.. I'll see if I can't get a hold of another router to test!

Thanks again

Re: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. - Please help!

it may need to have your Internet user name and password re-entered
usually thats added to the firmware
When you connect to the modem - do you need to enter any info at all ?
if not then the router should work in default settings

so you will need to log into the router with a cable connected PC

i posted above the user manual
