Internet connection drops frequently

Hey all,

I've exhausted my own knowledge on how to solve this, I've been on plenty of forums to try and fix my internet but it seems whatever problem I have needs a post of its own.

I stay connected for around 2 minutes, and then experience around a minute of disconnection, in that sort of pattern. It's not exact, sometimes the connection can last up to 15 minutes, but very rarely longer than that.

I've made sure my broadband is all set up correctly, and performed an ipconfig /release and /renew. The problem keeps returning.

I am running Windows 7, and have a TalkTalk fibre optic broadband wireless connection. The router is a Huawei HG 532 with up-to-date firmware. It is isolated from interfering electronics, and not too far at all from my PC. I've also ran an up-to-date Malwarebytes scan, which came up with 0 objects found.

Other people using this broadband have not been experiencing the same problems that I have. That said, I play online games, in which the problems are much more noticeable, whereas my house mates generally just browse the web, listen to music, etc.

This whole internet dropping thing must be a dead horse on these forums, and I'm sorry to bring it up again. I'll submit any information necessary to finding a solution for this problem. I'd like to make 100% sure it's nothing wrong with my PC before paying to have an engineer round.

Thanks a bunch!

can you connect to the router by a cable and see if it also disconnects on cable

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

lets see ifs wireless interference
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

Wi-Fi Inspector | Xirrus
( the site now appears to require a business email, and does not allow webbased emails like gmail, hotmail or yahoo etc )

Use the links below

Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector | PCWorld
Download Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor 1.2

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here
http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/xirruswifiinspectorguide1-2-0

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

To post a screen shot of the active window.

Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool
How to use the Windows Snipping Tool

Windows 8
you can use the snipping tool > Open Snipping Tool (From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type "snip" and press enter.
>Press the Esc. key.
>go back to your Windows 8 start screen - Swipe from left or press Window Button
>Press Ctrl+PrntScr button to use Snipping Tool
see here

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for your response, I've uploaded some pics to imgur of Xirrus (SSID is TALKTALK-15BBFC).

When working

When not working

As for the router lights. Both when the internet is on for me, and off for me, they are the same:

Power: Solid green
Internet: Flashing green
ADSL: Flashing green
WLAN: Flashing green

Thanks for your help, I'm currently lacking an ethernet wire to check if a wired connection would stop the disconnections.

That is the website I have downloaded and updated my driver from, but it turns out that may not be the problem after all.

My housemates have begun saying that they have been getting similar problems, and when mine goes off, it's the same time as theirs. I got on the phone with TalkTalk, and the crackling in the line seems to indicate that the Open Reach face plate on the phone socket may be faulty.

We're having an engineer around soon to look in to it.

Thanks for offering some suggestions anyway, really appreciate it!

your welcome , my brother had the same issue in kent , they live on the pilgrims way and had noise on the line for quite a while - over a year - turned out it was a about a mile up the road a branch was rubbing against the overhead cables

if you have a BT master socket, that will eliminate the house wiring , by connecting the router direct to that internal socket without a filter

::. Kitz - Improve your adsl connection speed .::

see if putting a phone into that socket , the cracking stops
