hi,
first of all sky is working ok. i have broadband....it connects to a laptop via wireless...but!

if i plug in the ethernet cable from my desktop, it knocks out the connection after maybe a few minutes!
this pute is a new re-build. all was perfect for the last 2 days [when i assembled it] and was ok this morning. i left the pute for 10 mins, and have had this prob since.

i phoned support, done the tests, and we both put it down to a broke cable. i had a spare [another sky one] in the house which i found later, tried it...no joy.
i then bought a new one...same result!
i have downloaded all new drivers for my mobo, i reset cmos....i re installed windows!!

pute connects to a network [ ethernet port is flashing] but wont to internet.

i enabled DHCP which for a minute, i thought fixed it but the connection still dropped albeit after another minute.

really need some help here please!

regards.
jim.

can we see an ipconfig /all from this working laptop

and also an ipconfig /all from the desktop- make sure we know which is which and if the desktop is working or not

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

you made a few changes - so whats the issue now

is it still the ethernet issue - and this is the case on three motherboards now

think it would be useful for a new trouble statement
include some make and models

yes, it still loses connection once the ethernet cable is plugged in. [ uptime 5 mins max]

the 1st and 2nd mobos were gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H.

1st one had a fault, tested in shop had the same problem as me.
replaced with same, i had same fault but mobo tested ok in shop.

i wasnt happy so splashed another £30 :( on ASUS P8Z77-V which had the same prob too!
this mobo has wifi which has saved me smashing the pute to pieces. it works with wifi.

now as i stated earlier, i can plug laptop in [ethernet] and that works ok.

ive tried all the flushdns...reset.log...reset catalog stuff and im really pissed off n stumped.

even though im connected now, i still want to resolve this as its caused me untold grief.
this was with a new install of windows, firewall off etc.
i posted this in the sky and windows 7 forum.........apart from yourself....no replies.
so thanx!! lol

so you have had three different motherboards
1) only proven faulty

2) a Laptop using the same cable and port connection on the router works fine

3) The desktop - works for about 5 minutes

can we see the ipconfig /all with NO wireless connected when the ethernet is working OK
and then same ipconfig /all when stops working and the additional three ping tests
see below

would you also try safemode with networking

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Safemode with networking
with a cable connected from PC to router
check the cable - see if there is a light on the router associated with the cable port used , also check if you have a green/yellow light on the PC LAN port
- try safemode with networking
as the PC starts keep tapping F8 - a menu appears - choose
safemode with networking - see if that works
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> type CMD to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Type the following command
Ping 192.168.0.1
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
Quote:
For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router.
The next two Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet. google is to test by name and the ping test using a number is checking that a connection exists without DNS.
these tests then confirm if there is a dns issue on the connection.

no idea what else you may have changed

see how it goes for the next few days and then you can comeback here and mark solved

You can mark the thread solved - from the dropdown " thread tools" at the top of the page - choose "Mark Solved"

no the bridge is so that you can connect a device through the laptop and share the internet
for example if you where on wireless and had an xbox with no wireless adapter - you could connect to the LAN on the PC and share the wireless connection
