I have two laptops running Windows 10. One connects via ethernet, one doesn't. I switch the same ethernet cable between the two laptops. Both are set to obtain ip and dns automatically. The laptop that connects has an ip of 192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0. The one that won't connect has a different ip: 169.254.186.15, 255.255.0.0. What would be causing the difference. I've uninstalled the second and get the same results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The 169.254.x.x IP is known as a APIPA address, it is a windows internal network scheme. You will receive this when the computer isn't talking to the DHCP server.
Are you running a router? A description of you network setup would be helpful.
In the search bar type cmd.exe, right click on it then select "Run as Administrator", then in the command prompt type ipconfig /release then press enter, next type ipconfig /renew and press enter.
If that doesn't work, power cycle the modem, and router (if you have one).
If you are not using a router, make sure to reboot the modem each time you change the ethernet connection to a different device. This allows the computer to restart the DHCP process for a IP. When your computer can't complete the DHCP process, it locks with a 169 type IP.
alpenadiver Followed your instructions and it works. Thank you for the precise instructions.
