I use an Acer laptop: Aspire 4720-4538

Earlier I was using it, and everything was running normally, and the battery died. Plugged it in, let it charge for awhile, and when I turned it back on it took me to the "Windows Error Recovery" screen. I selected "Launch Startup Repair" and the screen went blank for a moment, and went right back to the recovery screen. Tried it again several times with the same results. Next, I tried selecting "Start Windows Normally" and it tried, rebooted, and took me back to that screen.

I bought it in 2008, refurbished, with Vista pre-installed, and it did not come with disks.

Press ALT+F10 during boot-up -- see if you can get into the Acer recovery partition.

Contact Acer for replacement Vista recovery discs - https://secure.tx.acer.com/RCDB/Main.aspx?brand=acer

I was able to get to the recovery menu.

I decided not to select any of the recovery options at that time, and clicked "exit" thinking that I would deal with it later.

It rebooted, and took me back to the windows error recovery screen. I selected "start windows normally" and it actually did! I'm not sure why, but that did the trick.

Now, is there anything I can do to avoid this from happening again?

See if one of these three can shed additional light on what happened -

1. WERCON -
START | type view | "View all Problem Reports" | 2x-click on line item for additional crash info

2. Reliability Monitor -
START | type perfmon /rel

3. Event Viewer -
START | type eventvwr.msc | Custom Views | Administrative Events

You should back up personal files in case the trouble resurfaces and you have to reinstall Windows.
