· OS - Windows 7 Pro
· x86 64bit
· HDD - WD 640gb Caviar Black (new)
· OS Windows 7 64bit Full Retail Version (Newegg)
· Age of OS installation - less than a week
· CPU i5 760 Lynnfield
· Video Card - ASUS ENGTX 460
· MotherBoard - ASUS P7P55D-E Pro
· Power Supply - Corsair TX850

BSOD has been happening frequently and mainly while using explorer. I really don't know what else to say because I haven't had time to work with it due to shut down problems.

I am concerned as to why the reports which were generated note that all my hardware is performing poorly. I am sure we can get this figured out though--you guys always do:)

thanks

There are issues with a PLXTech switch (most likely a PCI Express device).
Do you have such a device installed on your system?

The performance ratings may be significant - but what do your Windows Experience Index scores show?

Please visit Windows Update and ensure that you have all updates for your system. You appear to be short at least a few.

It is possible that the following older drivers may be causing your problems.
Please either REMOVE or Update the older drivers listed below.
HOW TO FIND DRIVERS:
DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Driver function of Device Manager as they are not the most current versions available.
Also, DO NOT update from the PC Manufacturer's website unless the Driver Reference cited below states that you should get the drivers from the OEM.

The most common drivers are located on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
If you can't find the driver, post back and we'll see what we can find.

Here's the older drivers that were found in the memory dump files:
Code:
[font=lucida console]
ATKDispLowFilter.sys Tue May 13 23:03:13 2008 (482A5671)
 - ASUSTeK Display Lower Filter
 - [url]http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#ATKDispLowFilter.sys[/url]

asusgsb.sys Thu Sep 27 09:14:50 2007 (46FBACCA)
 - ASUS Virtual Video Capture Device Driver
 - [url]http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html#asusgsb.sys[/url]
[/font]
The memory dumps may point to a hardware cause for this - but let's see what the above steps do first. Please post back if you experience further issues after trying the stuff that I suggested.

While waiting you can try these free diagnostics:
I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
http://www.carrona.org/memdiag.html (read the details at the link)
http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: http://www.carrona.org/malware.html (read the details at the link)

Thanks usasma,

I don't know what a PXTech switch is...the only device occupying a PCI-e slot is my video card?

Only thing I can think of is that I did not connect the cables to my USB 6.0 connectors during system build. Could that be causing an issue?

Windows Experience Index test shows the following:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz 7.3
Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB 7.5
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 7.5
Gaming graphics 2815 MB Total available graphics memory 7.5
Primary hard disk 561GB Free (596GB Total) 5.9

Certainly appears that my HDD is the weakest link!

Memtest86+ Only ran 4 passes but showed 0 errors

The HDD diagnostic test is new to me, but I will run that as well and see what it shows, especially since that seems to be my weakest link.

I will download and install the drivers you listed along with any Windows updates available--I did however install all available directly after the install of OS.

Here is one odd thing though. Since my post here at TSF, I have not experienced any more BSOD's--I'm not complaining but prior to my first post, BSOD was happening frequently--Don't know what to think of that?

Thank you

I haven't seen 640 gB drives in a while, so I suspect that it may be an older model that doesn't respond as fast as the newer one's.

FWIW - I have a WD3000GLFS that also shows 5.9 on the WEI score, yet mine doesn't report any performance issues. Also, it seems to me that 7.5 is the highest that the ratings go.

Regarding the PLXTech switch ( http://www.plxtech.com/ )
Please go into Device Manager and see what's there. If you find any troubled devices, please right click on them, select Properties, and then select the Details tab.
In the dropdown box select Hardware ID and let us know what it says.

Device Manager shows 1 trouble device:

ACS-6xxxx Hardware Id's

PCI\VEN_10B5&DEV_8608&SUBSYS_860810B5&REV_BA
PCI\VEN_10B5&DEV_8608&SUBSYS_860810B5
PCI\VEN_10B5&DEV_8608&CC_060400
PCI\VEN_10B5&DEV_8608&CC_0604

As for the 640gb drive, I purchased it in place of the same WD (black) because the 1tb model was out of stock. I didn't realize it would have an effect on performance else I would have spent a little more.

Also, I tried finding different drivers for the "old" asusgsb.sys / ATKDispLowFilter.sys but came up empty?

I tried using the ASUS driver wizard but it didn't show anything about what you listed. Carrona.org just sent me to ASUS as well.

I think I may have found it! Post #6 here shows how to fix it: http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...d=1&model=P7P55D-E+PRO&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

Don't worry about the 640 gB drive - it's working as well as my Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive (also rated 5.9 in the WEI). I used to have RAID and didn't see a whole lot of improvement - that's why I went back to a single drive.

The Asus video capture driver is an unknown to me. Do you have a video capture device? If so, what's the exact model number (presuming it's an Asus device)? Worst case, you can rename it from asusgsb.sys to asusgsb.BAK - but let's leave that until we run out of other things to do.

Asus driver wizard is probably your best bet. Carrona.org is my website - and I just get the info by searching around the web for it.

PS - If you're not having any problems, don't knock it! :)

Okay, thanks to your "fix" for the ACS-6xxxx, Device Manager no longer finds any troubled devices:)

I didn't install any Video Capture Devices so I don't know what that driver is referring to? Unless is has something to do with the ASUS Gamer OSD because I really don't know what that utility does.

Anyway, I had another BSOD episode today but that was before applying the above driver fix. Hopefully that solves that issue.

I'll keep you posted...

Just an update to let you know I uninstalled the OSD program along with the ASUS graphic card monitor and that solved a few problems:)

Also, I fixed the constant iw3sp.exe errors when trying to play COD 4 by updating to the latest video driver from the ASUS website (took the place of the windows driver) all seems well so far.

As for the BSOD's, (which I was experiencing many times over the past week) they "seem" to have stopped:) I'm not convinced that I've seen the last of them yet though because the event logs point to some sort of HDD controller issue.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.
