Multiple BSOD

I think I may know the culprit of this issue, my touchpad(what I saw on perfmon) if this is the problem then can you please tell me how to disable the touchpad completely because it's not working properly because a while ago I tried to open up my laptop and there was a thin sticker holding the touchpad in place and it ripped apart..that's why it's no longer working/doesn't bother me that it's not working I don't need to use it but it seems that it's causing BSOD on my laptop.
If this is the problem, please tell me how to disable my touchpad programs so it won't cause anymore problems to my computer.

Not sure if this is related but it started this morning, at startup my WinPatrol program opened up and I saw this:

View image: 0006

didn't touch anything! it just froze on it's own! then I tried clicking on No and same thing happened, seconds later I got a BSOD, next startup same thing, tried to click on "No" same error, BSOD, restart..same thing, so I quickly went to uninstall WinPatrol and re-installed it..it did help but inside the program there is an error for the Java for IE..I need some help with this also..because I feel like this will also keep creating problems.

Then after restart of BSOD I also got this message from Windows that I thought I would show you may/or may not be helpful:

Hi. . .

The dumps name an Avast driver as the probable cause -
Code:
[FONT=Lucida Console]ngvss.sys    Fri Jul 03 08:02:21 2015 (559679CD)
[/FONT]
Reinstall current version of Avast (maybe there's an updated version...?) -

Driver Reference Table - ngvss.sys

See if BSODs persist.

For info, the dumps were VERIFIER_ENABLED. Be sure to turn Driver Verifier off.

As for the Java message - remove Java from your system if not needed.

If needed, be sure it's updated - https://java.com/en/download/

Regards. . .

Avast was updated to the latest version but I re-installed it anyway.

I had no idea about driver verifier..so to turn it off I just type "verifier /reset" into cmd, is that all?

I do need Java, mine is all up to date. I just noticed I have a previous version so I removed it.

/ What about the touchpad error I saw in perfmon...what was that about/is it something that will cause problems? since it's broken/can I disable it so it won't keep showing errors?

-Thank you

Hi. . .

My pleasure to try and help.

Good thing to reinstall Avast. Perhaps the original installation was flawed or corrupted. I've never seen that particular Avast driver listed in a BSOD before.

Yes... typing "verifier /reset" (no quotes) into an Admin CMD screen followed by a reboot will shut Driver Verifier off.

Glad to hear of updated Java & uninstall of prior version.

You can disable or uninstall touchpad software and allow Microsoft legacy drivers to takeover. That's what I've done in all of my laptops. No Synaptics installed anywhere here.

That's weird because I always download from the official website..not sure why that happened.
Sorry...not sure I understand, uninstall touchpad software and allow Microsoft drivers to takeover..I don't understand what that is...what is that going to do/ do I need to do this/and if so, how?

/I also got another BSOD this morning not sure why..it happened after my Chrome browser just froze, on the BSOD it said a problem has been detected and has forced windows to shut down.

Also, to remove the toupad is it just through add/remove programs, the synaptics driver, that's all?

#6 ·
Yes... remove Synaptics if you wish. The touchpad will still work using Microsoft legacy drivers. It may not have full functionality. Test it for yourself. You can always reinstall Synaptics from your system manufacturer's support site.

Get the latest dump file from \windows\minidump - copy it to Documents; zip it up and attach. I'll be glad to take a look at it.

You won't be able to zip it up in \windows\minidump because of perms.

I have a feeling it involves your ~2007 wifi driver that I noticed in your other dump files. It would make sense if the Avast driver that was named in the prior BSODs is involved in "phoning home" (interacting with your old networking driver).

Personally I would remove Avast and run Microsoft Security Essentials. I think less and less Antivirus programs are not adequate to face today's issues anyway as they do not do much about Trojans or Spyware which are the major issues. Running Malwarebytes Pro or Emsisoft which is both Antivirus and AntiMalware gives you a much better solution to today's problems, and away from the struggling antivirus programs which are virtually facing extinction since real virus are a thing of the past and today's antivirus programs have tried but cannot handle today's malware.
I would look for the newest touchpad driver and install it first because within the software if you look in "mouse" in Control Panel, most have a shut off switch for if you are using an external device and installing the newest driver may be the only way you will see that and Microsoft Legacy drivers will never give you that option. John is quite right though there is no need today for any 3rd party software for mouse or touchpad except if it gives you that option, something I never leave home without. I would also suggest since you are obviously using a mouse, uninstalling any mouse software using either Revo Uninstaller or Wise Uninstaller which will also remove any registry entries always left behind by Windows Uninstaller (sorry to say)!

Hi -

The bugcheck on the most recent dump -

0x1000007f (0x8,,,) - "double fault" - the error handler was in the midst of handling an error when [another] error occurred within the error that was being handled. The CPU realized "error within an error"; signaled "double fault"; BSOD ensued.

The Microsoft Windows win32 subsystem driver win32k.sys was named as probable cause; it is merely a default here an IS NOT the cause.

http://www.sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=win32k.sys

Avast was not mentioned in this dump, but I agree with Hardware Manager Rich-M's conclusions and recommendations.

Overall, the dump was rather inconclusive.

Regards. . .

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
        use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.

So I do nothing about the corrupt driver..since it was inconclusive?

/ I'm not sure if I want to remove Avast...before Avast I actually did have MSE..but had to install Avast because Avast actually caught a threat that MSE didn't..so I think I trust Avast a little more.
I have Avast on all my computers/desktops and no problems.

I do have Malwarebytes anti-malware installed as well.

I think my laptop is always causing me problems because of my broken optical drive and now my broken touchpad..:/ I'v been getting BSOD from both of these in the past..I know I could replace them both but I'v been thinking of upgrading my laptop to a newer model sometime in the near future maybe..mine is very outdated.

Anywho, / My touchpad is broken from the inside. I opened my laptop from the screws and the tape holding the touchpad inside broke off which is why the touchpad doesn't work. So I don't think installing a new touchpad driver will help since the little tape from inside broke off...?
not sure I understand this..

Not sure what you mean by turning the mouse "off"...disabling my mouse? I kind of need it to work though as it is my only pointing device.
/I had software for my touchpad which I uninstalled. I can double check the uninstallation with Revo.
Not sure what kind of software my mouse has, under hardware it just says
"HID-complaint mouse" so you want me to remove this? wouldn't that uninstall my mouse/make it stop working? I need my mouse to work though...I'm a little confused.

If you're talking about win32k.sys, it was not corrupted at all; rather it was named as a default because the real culprit eluded detection.

When Microsoft drivers start showing up in BSODs, hardware failure cannot be ruled out.

However, the dumps will never tell us the piece of failing hardware as they simply can't do so.

I was not talking about turning the mouse off I was talking about being able to have the mouse be default so that touchpad goes off when mouse is inserted inro Usb port. I was saying to uninstall any 3rd party mouse software as it is completely unnecessary as Windows has had adequate mouse drivers for the last 6 versions.

Unless you have Malwarebytes Pro, then you have installed Malwarebytes free you have 0 protection from that it does nothing in free version. Pro version protects you at the gate keeping the bad guys out, that is protection. You computer, your decision. If you were my client and insisted on having Avast installed you would also be finding a new computer repair service as we would have parted ways over that. The Antivirus though has almost reached the point of being irrelevant though but we try to eliminate the ones that are espewcially dragging down the system. If you do not have antimalware paid version running in the background, once again you would be looking for another pc repair guy as I hate doing the same thing over and over again and I will not go back to a client every year scanning and ripping out malware because sooner or later I will fracture Windows doing this, and so you would have to find someone who believes in showing an open door to all malware and ripping and gouging it out once you have let it in, trashing your version of Windows, then I am not your guy, I won't do it that way!

Ok.. so..just so I understand..there is no threat with the corrupted driver?

or

is there still a problem and it's with the Avast driver? and there's no other way to stop Avast from doing this except to remove Avast?

I don't understand..because I'v been using Avast for a long time and never had problems with it before..is this something that's new..? or has Avast always been this problematic?

//
I know you guys are recommending I install MSE...but it's hard for me to get my head around that, installing a program that failed to catch a threat in my previous experience...makes me not trust it very much..at catching threat's in the future.

//It seems people here on TSF are always saying different things to me. Someone here told me that MSE is not good enough and Avast is best for protection.

But I'm wondering if these programs have changed? Is that why Avast is causing me problems now? / how do I know in a couple years MSE won't cause me problems either :/

Actually I am not recommending only install Mse. I am suggesting only install it with Mbam Pro because by itself it is no better protection than Avast, it is not made to solve today's problems anymore than Avast is. And yes Avast like most antivirus programs has been slipping for years as their main focus is seldom a problem anymore and while they have all tried to work in Malware protection, few if any have done so effectively.

The world of infection has changed drastically in the last 6-7 years to the point where virus really are not seen anymore whereas many still call a threat perceived as a virus and that is a misnomer so many are guilty of.

To have proper protection for today's threats either Malwarebytes Pro or Emsisoft to my way of thinking are the best offered today. Webroot because it contains Spysweeper is also a decent product but not as effective IMHO as the first two and Nod32 Antivirus is also quite effective not because it is an antivrus, but because it has excellent protection from bad websites again IMHO.

Hope this makes it clearer.

Ok, so any free programs I can use that'll offer good protection..?

I have installed:

Avast
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free edition)
SuperAntiSypware free edition
Ccleaner
WinPatrol
and WOT for Chrome

So remove Avast, install MSE?
Remove MBAM ..? anything I can install free that'll help with protection?
..everything else good? :/

/ @jcgriff2 - Ok, will do if I encounter anymore BSOD.

No there aren't that was my whole point if I knew of any worth using I would have told you. It just fractures me you know there are no free computers, and that doesn't stop you from having one. But you are not willing to protect it by buying proper software to do so?

#20 ·
True, but it's a one time payment for a computer, not monthly/or yearly..I don't like to do that.. I don't know if I can pay a monthly/yearly fee for protection, it'd be best if I could do a one time buy/ buy the disk and that's it, so I don't have to keep paying.

Is that available for MBAM pro? because I did notice nod32 offers disks /
Is it MBAM pro or premium? or are they the same thing?
I could check out amazon also..
I will think about this and purchase them when I can as long as it's a one time purchase I'll be ok with that.

Mbam Pro and premium are one and the same. They used to offer lifetime licenses
and every so often they run promos offering that at a slightly higher price. I have toi think if someone can't afford $24.95 a year for proper protection then maybe what that is really saying is they can't really afford the computer. Every so often the have better term offers and Nod32 does have deals usually at Newegg and I have seen it as low as $10 a year.

I guess the reason for yearly subscriptions is remember you want to pay once and be done but they have to keep working as new demands require different reswources to continually adapt to the changing of Malware out there. They have to keep on top in a fast changing Malware environment.
