HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
Hi, I am a long suffering HP user fed up with a notebook that always hangs and crashes (2 years worth). Its also really slow and i've noticed its running over 30 processes and i 've no idea what they all are, it seems too many! I have tried cleaning up registry and updated security to Norton 360 v5. It's a little better but I'm worried the crashes and processes are linked. Is it a OS or malware problem?
I did a DDS scan which is below and the attach.zip is , well, attached. Any ideas would be really welcome.

App Crashes and Hangs, HP G7000 Notebook
Hi, Take two!
I have run the reports requested for my G7000 Notebook that has been locking and hanging for a long time. Seems to run slow too. I noticed it runs over 30 processes. Any ideas?
Questions answered as follows:
OS - is Vista
· x86 32-bit operating system
· What was original installed OS on system? = Vista
· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? Pre-installed
· Age of system (hardware) - 2008
· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? No its pre-installed
· CPU = Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2370 @1.73 Ghz 1.73 Ghz
· Video Card = Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset family
· MotherBoard = Not sure
· Power Supply - brand & wattage = not sure
· System Manufacturer = HP
· Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) = HP G7065 EM
Thanks for your help
Issi

Re: HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
Just wondered whether the reports I loaded would help diagnose the hang and lock up issues my Hp G7000 is having?

Re: HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
You have some major memory corruption going on. Please run these tests and report back the results
1. Memtest86 - Run for 7-8 passes - RAM - Test with Memtest86+ - Windows 7 Forums
2. Prime95 - Run all three tests for 3-4 hours each or until fail - CPU - Stress Test with Prime95 - Windows 7 Forums

Re: HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
Along with mgorman's analysis, I see that Naveng.sys is unloading/reloading itself several times. I think your Symantec Antivirus engine is running amok and is consuming resources as a result. You should uninstall it temporarily to see if the problem is remedied. You can confirm at least that the AV engine is disabled by running Autoruns and under drivers tab looking for naveng.sys and navex15.sys. If any of them are present in the list, do not remove them from there. Just mention to us that they're still there.
However, mgorman does have a point with the memory, in that while it may not be causing this particular problem, your RAM may start going bad and will become a problem in the near future if this is the case. Follow his instructions for diagnosing the issue, especially the memtest part.

Re: HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
Thanks to you both.
I have attempted to run the memtest 3 times but the laptop crashes each time before it completes 1 pass. I will try again. I have run the three torture tests, each for several hours with no failure. Test results are attached.
Re. Symantec "running amoc" do i uninstall the entire Norton 360 or just a component of it?

Re: HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
You made sure to run memtest86+ right? There's two versions of memtest, so make sure you're using the 86+ version since it's more compatible with newer hardware.
If you are running memtest86+, then you are running it outside Windows (restart, run before Windows startup)? I can't see how you can run it inside Windows, but if you are running it outside, then explain what you mean by your laptop crashing when it attempts to run.

Re: HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
Hi VirGnarus
I ran memtest 86+ direct from the flash drive on start up, not from windows. In total I ran the test 5 times. It would run for between 5 and 8 minutes before the laptop turned itself off completely. In the time it ran it detected approx 200 errors on the first pass, which it never completed.
Incidentally yesterday the laptop crashed and just prior displayed a blue screen of text which referred to a "memory management" issue.

Re: HP G7000 Notebook runs slow always hangs
Well it's evident you got hardware troubles, but as to what it is I'm not entirely sure. The only thing I can see that could explain the laptop turning itself off as opposed to restarting is a power, motherboard of cpu issue, either of which are typically irreplaceable in a laptop chassis (the cpu probably is).
It may be the oddball case of overheating, though I doubt it given that memtest hardly uses the cpu. Still, it's free to open the thing and determine if there's a bunch of dust cluttered inside.
In any case, it just sounds like the ole laptop is about to meet the trash bin. You can try coughing up some dough to purchase some replacement memory, since that's your cheapest and only available option right now (aside from the cleaning). However, while the memtest problem suspects potential memory issues, the system turning off completely does not.
