Dell XPS 8300, BSOD, freezing, amber light, crashes, save me!

Hey all.

Im currently freaking out over my computers behavior of late. I think it started a week ago. I have windows 7 64 bit, dell xps 8300, dual screen monitor set up and it has been absolutely fine since i got it in i believe around early 2011.

One day my computer froze twice after reaching desktop. Then it restarted it self before the official windows loading screen came up and another time before i reached log in screen. After another freeze, i then got a blue screen on the next load after reaching log in screen or something. Holding down the power button i turned it off, then it turns it self back on and enters the power button amber light flash 'sleep'. I turn it off again and leave it for a minute.

My next try i get to enter safe mode and i do a system restore point dating 2 days back. The computer is fine for the next couple of days, but after shutting down i saw that windows updates were being applied.

After some time of being normal it begun the same horrible behavior i wrote about before. System restored again and decided to turn off auto windows updates so they haven't been installed. But this hasn't done anything since my computer is now doing the behavior AGAIN. Yesterday i got the amber light flashing again and later a blue screen about 'Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_area' but after leaving the computer for a while i came back and it was fine for the whole night.

Today i just got a blue screen about 'system_service_exception'. There seems to be no trouble whilst in safe mode. Couple days ago i was able to use 'My Dell Support Center' and do a hardware check up which resulted in no problems found. I uninstalled the latest free superantispyware i got recently but that didnt do anything. I havnt installed any new hard ware into the tower. The only update i can think of that i installed before this started happening was the new NVIDIA drive.
This is killing me. Any ideas? All help will be much appreciated.

Rhys.

Ok i just did a 4-5 hour full system scan with Microsoft Safety Scanner that found and removed 7 infected items. I have a significant boost in performance and no troubles as of yet after a restart.

I still followed the BSOD posting instructions. I had to leave safe mode to run the system health report. I ran the BSOD File Collection app in safe mode after the scan and then did the report after restarting.

At the moment everything is running quite smoothly. Just incase, heres most of the BSOD posting instructions if everything starts happening again. Zip should be attached.

· OS - Windows 7
· 64 bit
· What was original installed OS on system? Win 7
· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM

· CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4ghz, 4 Core(s)

Thanks for the assist any way, hopefully i dont have to return.

Cheers.

ok the virus scan was unsuccessful and im back to the horrible ness i described in the first post.
My McAfee real time scanner automatically turns it self off when it try to turn it on and those ghost disk drives with blue question marks still linger.

McAfee is a frequent cause of BSOD's. As a test we recommend uninstalling McAfee and replacing with Microsoft Security Essentials and see if that provides stability. Use the McAfee removal tool linked here: Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software - ESET Knowledgebase

I wiped my computer clean, back to factory default settings with a back up partition that dell provided. Before it though i did a full diagnostics test that gave me all green ticks.

After downloading over 100 windows updates, my latest Nvidia driver finally installed and i believe im back to normal.

Only problem is that when i press windows updates via the control panel, it will not load at all, it just freezes the control panel but under processes it still says its running. McAfee controls the automatic updating anyway.

After about 2 days of the wipe, not a single blue screen.

Happy Easter to all, and i pray i dont have to return.
Cheers.
Rhys.
