Hello guys,
Toshiba Satellite P20-552 is a Pentium 4/64MB Graphics Card memory laptop. I have owned this laptop since 2005.
Today after putting the laptop on stand-by, I resumed, and then after the system restored Windows, the screen started going black and back to normal again, then I noticed some artifacts on the screen,
then black again, then normal, then artifacts, etc. This continued for about 2 minutes whereupon I resetted by pressing and holding down the power button.
When I powered up the laptop again, I got the dreaded BSOD, black version. Symptoms:
-Black Screen (BSOD)
-No TOSHIBA logo
-No POST tests
-No visible lettering on screen
-No HDD activity (HDD seems that it's not working)
-CDROM seems to work, however can't boot with either XP CD or Bootmed Rescue CD. Cd ROM just reads the disk and then idles.
-Screen appears to work okay, because it kind of flashes when the latop powers up. (normal behavior)
Tried so far:
1. Using P20-552 PSU on my Toshiba Satellite 1950-801. Works.
2. Booting up Satellite P20-552 from the unit's battery. PSU removed. Same results. (BSOD etc).
3. Removing battery and booting up Satellite P20-552 with its own PSU. Same results. (BSOD etc).
4. Removing battery and booting up Satellite P20-552 using Toshiba Satellite 1950-801's PSU. Same results. (BSOD etc).
5. Removing all peripherals, baterry and CDROM drive and holding down power button for 1 minute,
then trying to boot. Same results. (BSOD etc).
6. Boot up holding (insert key of your choice here) pressed down. Same results.
This issue looks to me like it's a MOBO "sudden death" issue. I was thinking to open the laptop and remove the CMOS battery, seeing as how Satellite P20-552 lacks a "hard reset" button, as a last resort.
What do you guys think? Any tips?
P.S.: This machine is NOT overclocked. I reserve OC for my QX 9650. I don't OC my laptops, as I use them only for business purposes, (i.e. Office, Acrobat, and some browsing).
