BSOD when using mobile broadband computer freezes, mouse + keyboard stops working
Hi,
I have a feeling this may be a driver error, but I dont know.
A friend gave me a computer,
Os: Vista x86
OEM I think
Hardware age: 2007
Age of installation: not sure, its my friends. Might not have been reinstalled before
CPU: Athlon 64x2
Video Card: Onboard Graphics
Mobo: Inspiron 532 mobo
PSU: Bestec ATX0300P5WB 300W
System Manufacturer: DELL
Model No.: Inspiron 531
It works perfectly fine, apart from when I connect to the internet through 3 mobile broadband (3 Huawei E122). Once it connects, internet explorer launches. As soon as I begin using IE, the computer freezes, mouse will not move, keyboard will not work, then after 2 mins it blue screens. stop code is 0x77. I have tried to exit IE and use firefox instead, this works much better but it still bluescreens, just less frequently.
My friend brought it to a local shop who told him the usb header on the mobo is the problem and needs a new mobo and qouted him 250 repair. However I dont think this is the problem as, no other usb device gives any trouble at all. And the mobile brodband dongle only crashes once it connects and the browser is launched.
I ran Norton antivirus, super anti spyware, malwarebytes antimalware, and RU Botted. All I picked up was a few malwares.
I also ran full system diagnostic test, with no problems.
list of installed software (incase there are known issues with them): Norton Antivirus, Easus Partition manager, thunderbird, microsoft works, ccleaner. I dont know if any are recently installed or not.
Any help would be very much appreciated, as I really dont know what to do with this
David
btw: in the perfmon disk D is an extrernal Hard drive that was connected at the time so its not a problem

Re: BSOD when using mobile broadband computer freezes, mouse + keyboard stops working
Okay, I ran the driver verifier
When I restarted the computer, I get the blue screen and it will not turn on
The stop error is 0x7E this time I think
I booted into safe mode and restored, then ran "verifier /query" in cmd
which returned: "No driver are acurrently verified"
I have attached the new dump file below
It must be a driver problem, what do you guys think?
Hopefully You can help me out guys

Re: BSOD when using mobile broadband computer freezes, mouse + keyboard stops working
Ok, I uninstalled super antispyware, and the driver verifier does not get a blue screen on startup anymore.
However I only installed super antispyware to help me fix this problem in the first place, so it is not at fault for the BSOD when I use the mobile broadband.
Can anyone help me? Anyone at all??

Re: BSOD when using mobile broadband computer freezes, mouse + keyboard stops working
Please be sure to turn Driver Verifier off by selecting "Delete existing settings" in the first window and then click on "Finish" - then reboot the system.
Leave SuperAntiSpyware uninstalled for the time being. Once we're finished troubleshooting your issues feel free to install the latest available version
Don't use CCleaner while we are troubleshooting as it can delete important information that we can use.
To rule out the USB header, just disconnect it at the mobo - the USB ports in the back are hardwired into the mobo and will still be usable.
Here's a description of the STOP 0x77 error: BSOD Index Please note under the Usual Causes section that there's a lot of hardware causes. So, please run these free tests:
Quote:
I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:
|
What type of malware did you find when scanning. Spyware usually isn't a problem, but Trojans/rootkits/other viruses usually are a problem.
The perfmon report won't open. I suspect that the zip archive is corrupted as the html file is only 1kb in size.
System info reports approx 150 Windows Updates installed. Most Vista SP2 systems have 210 to 250 installed. Please visit Windows Update and ensure that you have all available updates.
Your system is starved for RAM, and this can cause issues with the system
Quote:
Total Physical Memory: 958 MB
Available Physical Memory: 300 MB
|
With only 300 mB available, the system will (at best) be very slow. Please ensure that you're only running one application at a time (to include the stuff in the System Tray).
A permanent fix would be to install at least 1 more gB of RAM (with 3 more gB being the optimum).
MSINFO32 reveals STOP 0x77 errors and STOP 0x7A errors with a status of c000000e (No Such Device). This tends to imply a hardware problem also (most likely a hard drive issue).
Please run these free stress tests if the hardware diagnostics (from above) passed:
Quote:
Then, if the above tests pass, I'd try these free stress tests:
Quote:
FurMark download site: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
NOTE: Set the alarm to go off at 90บC. Then watch the system from that point on. If the system doesn't display a temperature, watch it constantly and turn it off at the first sign of video problems. DO NOT leave it it unmonitored, it can DAMAGE your video card!!!
If the temperature gets above 105บC, quit the test - the video card is overheating.
- Click "Quit" to exit
|
Quote:
Prime95 download site: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight please run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
Monitor the CPU temperature and DON'T let it exceed 85บC. If it does, then you probably have a CPU cooling problem.
This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.
More details on the use of this test: Torture test your CPU with Prime95

More to follow once the memory dumps are finished running....

Re: BSOD when using mobile broadband computer freezes, mouse + keyboard stops working
If the disk hardware passed the diagnostics, there are many older drivers on your system that are probably incompatible with Win7. I'd strongly suggest removing the software for your dialup modem and then physically removing the device from your system (it's not compatible with Win7 AFAIK).
Please update the following drivers (particularly those highlighted in RED:
OLDER DRIVERS PRESENT IN THE DUMP FILES
- Create a System Restore Point prior to doing any of this. DO NOT mess with the drivers themselves - leave the Windows\System32\drivers directory alone unless we specifically direct you to it!
- Please update these drivers from the device manufacturer's website - or uninstall them from your system. Reference links are included below.
- DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Drivers function of Device Manager.
- Please feel free to post back about any drivers that you are having difficulty locating.
- Windows Update exceptions may be noted below for Windows drivers:

Re: BSOD when using mobile broadband computer freezes, mouse + keyboard stops working
HI
Thanksfor the replies, much appreciated.
Before I got your reply, I tried wiping the drive completely of vista and doing a fresh install using windows 7 this time.
This fixed the issue with the bsod when using mobile broadband. However now when I use mobile broadband, it keeps disconnecting and saying 'server not found' even though there is coverage. It had never done this before.
Do you think my bsod problem is fixed?
Any advice for what to do now, as the internet keeps disconnecting? Is it the mobile broadband dongle? Incompatability with win7? or a continuation of the problems I had with Vista?

Re: BSOD when using mobile broadband computer freezes, mouse + keyboard stops working
First, make sure that you've disconnected the front USB ports at the motherboard.
Next, plug the USB modem into the USB ports in the back of the system.
Ensure that you have Win7 compatible drivers (NOT Windows Vista). If not, don't use the modem. There are too many problems with USB modems using Vista drivers in Win7.
