I thought i might aswell put the required sticky answers first before you got to the details. Well, for around a year now my laptop has been experiencing frequent and frustratingly stubborn blue screens. These usually occur at completely random (it seems) times, both at times of great stress to the system and at complete standstill, no single program or process having any definitive sort of influence. All i can sort of gather it that it seems to be at times of high network usage but there have been plenty of times when it has been pushed, but no crash has ever occured.
All my attempts so far to rectify the situation have been half hearted and unsurprisingly produced no miracles. Recently the situation has become severe enough to warrant more serious action. Namely, i recently discovered the hard drive (which came with the laptop) had developed several read errors, failed tests in numerous programs. As a result, i attempted to make a complete copy of my HDD into a replacement drive but had to skip certain sections due to the read errors. After the copy, i successfully installed and ran the new HDD with no difficulties and i ran a whole 2 days without a blue screen. I thought i was in the clear. But no. All hope came crashing down when it just reared its ugly head again. I checked the disk again, but this time it passed all tests. I have tested other hardware on here, like the memory, network adapter, battery etc but all come out clean.
I had only recently found out how to enable dumps to be made on my blue screens.
So, i found out about driver verifier. A handy little tool i thought, and i gave it a go. But it seems that it gives me absolutely zero information when it blue screens. Nothing. Not a sausage. No mention of any offending driver, nor any kind of dump. So that fell through.
I'm at my wits end with this right now, and am desperate for this to be resolved.
I would like to point out that nearly all of my blue screens have been UNCORRECTABLE HARDWARE ERRORS. Even after the disk transfer. Since i checked all my hardware, and it came out fine, it baffels me how this can be true.
I hope that someone out there can make sense of this mess and finally solve this problem for me. I would be eternally grateful.

Well that didn't take very long :5-censore
Today i attempted to update these drivers one by one, but i've already run into several problems.
1. The first few links i was given by joek0617 i.e.

it would help if you updated drivers......

sym_u3.sys Thu Oct 20 19:12:49 2005 (43583281)

symc8xx.sys Fri Nov 11 16:45:56 2005 (43751F24)
Symbios 8XX SCSI Miniport Driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=symc8xx.sys[/code]
all trailed me to a COMPLETELY obscure website known as LSI. I could not for the life of me find anything to go on whether it be the driver itself, the device the driver is responsible for, nada. So i decided to backbench those. Move on.

2. The next line, i.e. the Intel Raid StorPort Driver link, brought me to Intel's website. Initially, i thought i had run across a stroke of luck with their "Driver Updater" software. But NOPE, soon as i gave it administrative privelages and permission to run, it blue screens on me, saying that a cpudrv.sys caused me to crash. :banghead: I was then curious to see if this was a one time thing, tried again, same happened but it gets better. Now i couldn't even get back the windows loading phase after reboot, so i had to startup repair and load my last restore point (thank god i made one). So i lost the dumps.

A question has occurred to me, as to how you guys can possibly keep up with the updates. Going from writhziden's quote
The drivers definitely should be updated as soon as possible; do not use any 3rd party tools to download drivers. Drivers should be obtained from HP Support and nowhere else. 3rd party driver downloading software often downloads software not intended for the system being updated.
-----
Are you telling me you manually check each and every driver you have on your entire system via your respective support website?

I apologize if i'm coming across as rude/boisterous but this issue is becoming more frustrating with each and every attempt i make to fix it. My time as well as everyone elses is restricted and valuable, and is currently being wasted. A hammer is becoming more and more likely to fix the situation at this rate.

Good lord do i really have that many outdated drivers
Is there a decent freeware Driver Updater out there that could handle this mass of drivers...doing them manually would be a real pain, and counterproductive should i get the wrong one..?
As for RAM, how much would you recommend for this sort of laptop?
And thank you for taking the time to help me on this, i really appreciate it.

3 GB of RAM is not an issue with a 32-bit Windows installation. I have a 32-bit Windows Vista Toshiba system that runs flawlessly with only 2 GB of RAM.

The drivers definitely should be updated as soon as possible; do not use any 3rd party tools to download drivers. Drivers should be obtained from HP Support and nowhere else. 3rd party driver downloading software often downloads software not intended for the system being updated. For laptops, this can be especially bad since HP went to a lot of trouble to provide special drivers for the laptop's power scheme. Using any drivers other than HP's will likely cause instability with the system.

HP Support

Also, remove any HP bloatware from the system.

I can understand you consternation.

A few problems here: You only provided us with one .dmp file making our jobs very difficult. It is best to have all .dmp files possible to find patterns. Likely, you are cleaning out the .dmps by running ccleaner or other file cleaning software. If you are also using any registry cleaners, those can lead to blue screen crashes by slowly stripping away registry keys that Windows needs to run properly; avoid them at all costs.

Please provide your latest crash reports since you have had new crashes: http://www.techsupportforum.com/for...ons-windows-8-windows-7-and-vista-452654.html

To answer your question about whether I update each driver one by one manually: If I need to, yes, but then I only have one or two drivers that are out of date whereas you have quite a few. Reasons I have less: I am careful about what software I install on my systems, and I update drivers from the manufacturer as they become available rather than trying to do all at once. That way, I can determine if a driver is buggy or needs updating based on how my system is behaving.

Further, the list given for drivers you should update is a little misleading since there are drivers there that you will not be able to update. There are also drivers there that even though they are outdated, they will likely not cause problems with the system. Knowing which drivers will likely not cause problems comes from a lot of experience with debugging crashes.

Typically, I try to go through the vendor site (HP in your case) for the user having issues and determine which drivers can and need to be updated. This is a lot of work on my part, which you've probably realized after trying to do this yourself, so bear with me.

HP makes this very difficult since they provide a number of unneeded drivers for storage devices, and those devices are often outdated. That is why I recommended removing HP bloatware; if you had a Vista disc to install with, I would also recommend a clean install of Windows to avoid having all the excess software/drivers added to the system.

Below, I have listed the drivers with drivers unable to be updated crossed out and with only those remaining that are likely to cause problems and need to be updated.

ADI SoundMAX Integrated HD Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista

Remove McAfee from your system and replace it instead with Microsoft Security Essentials to see if it provides more stability. If you have to use McAfee for your work, at least make sure it is up to date; yours is four years outdated.

Did the Infineon Technologies Personal Secure Drive software come with your system, or did you buy it as an add-on for security?

Update MagicISO; yours is old and may cause conflicts.

Here is the updated driver list:

Hi, thanks again for the quick reply.

-I do use CCleaner but i have since disabled any options that would remove the dmps now.
-I don't use McAffee at all, i use ZoneAlarm for my firewall and AV.
-I know nothing of the Infineon Technologies Personal Secure Drive you spoke of, so i assume it must have come with the system.
-I have removed as much HP Bloatware as i could, along with MagicISO (i barely used it anyway)

Of a different note, i too was poking around HP's support site. And i came across their "HP SoftPaq Download Manager". This, it seems, is what i have been searching for, for quite some time. It looks at my hardware, checks their supported drivers and outlines the ones necessary. HP Support from HP Software...how can it possibly go wrong. I've gone about installing all the "necessary" ones they claim, and had complete success, apart from one pertaining to my Webcam.

I'll post again when i have some definitive results. Thank you again for looking into this for me.

Thanks for the info about HP SoftPaq Download Manager. I was not aware of that software. I am currently running it on my HP system to see what I think of it.

Hmmm... seems to have limited support for desktops; mine wasn't included. I've still bookmarked the site for future use in helping users with HP laptops or business desktop systems.

Did you have McAfee installed at any time on that system? There are still remnants of it running in the background; that alone could cause conflicts, especially with another security program like ZoneAlarm installed.

Hmm..it might either have come pre-installed on the system or it might have come from my University as a "recommended" piece of software. Either way, i do not use McAffee at all, how would i go about purging it from my system?

I also have a slight report of the Softpaq Download Manager. After installing all the necessary ones, i then tried to uninstall the "Authentec Fingerprint Software" since i was sure the driver i had recently installed for it, had rendered it useless. So, confident i was on the right track, i restarted...but then, disaster. Blue screen's galore. All "STOP: 0x0000007B". I could not load up Windows, not even in Safe Mode. I was once again forced to update from a Windows Restore Point. BUT it seemed that each package i downloaded and installed from HP's SDM created it's own restore point. So, i reverted to a point in time where i did the last update from the SDM but not the uninstall. SUCCESS. It loaded up just fine.

I have a feeling i'm no where near out of the woods just yet. But this might be a step in the right direction at least.

Ah, my apologies for missing that link, i guess i've was a bit snowblind from all the info being dealt at once. However, i'm sorry to say that the link gets me to an "Article Not Found" section of McAffee's website.
I used google to locate the proper site, downloaded the tool and i am running it as i speak.
I'll edit this post when i have the results.

#16 ·
Ah...seems i can't edit posts on this forum. Oh well, i'll just post here then. Running the tool was fine, i assume it's gotten rid of those McAffee remnants. Every other driver you've mentioned i've looked into and rectified wherever possible. Now i guess i play the waiting game. If i run into any more problems, i'll be back.

#17 ·
:sigh: I'm back already, the thing blue screened on me yet again while i was cleaning out some old files i never use any more, old setup.exe's and whatnot from a bygone era. Once again, an uncorrectable hardware error.
I've included another BSOD report zip for you to look through, but at the moment the situation is best summed up like by this -> :horse:

It looks like we've probably ruled out software as the cause of crashes. The only piece of software still remaining that may cause conflicts is:
SbAlg.sys Tue Apr 24 04:37:50 2007 (462DDDFE)
McAfee /SafeBoot Endpoint Protection driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=SbAlg.sys

You may need to contact McAfee Support for removing those last remnants.

One last thing to try on the software side:

If the clean boot does not fix things, proceed with the following information.

BugCheck 0x124

For your hardware stop 0x124 crash, use the following hardware checks.
  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

  • Run FurMark to test the display card for artifacts and temperature issues.

  • Run Display card memory tests to check the display card for memory problems.

  • Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Event Viewer. In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, click Application to let it load, right click Application and click Find.... Search for chkdsk or wininit to find the logs.
For any drives that do not give the message:
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems
run disk check again as above. In other words, if it says:
Windows has made corrections to the file system
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.

  • Run all Basic tests with SeaTools: S.M.A.R.T. Check, Short Drive Self Test, Drive Information, Short Generic, and Long Generic. Run the tests for all HDDs.
  • If you have an SSD, make sure the following are up to date:
    • SSD firmware
    • BIOS Version
    • Chipset Drivers
    • Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
    • If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

  • Run Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

  • Run Prime95 to test your CPU, RAM modules, and general hardware.

Hello again writh, i tried to follow your latest initial suggestion about McAffee's last remnants but..i couldn't find that driver in question. I contacted a McAffee representative via IM, sent them system information but they also confirmed that there was no longer any trace of McAffee products or drivers left at all. So i dunno where that's come from...
As for the clean boot option, i'll give that a go if my system blue screens again. I had a funny feeling that i was messing around with my HP Webcam at the time aswell, having uninstalled it intending to update it with the latest softpaq from HP. But for some reason, that's the only "critical" or for that matter softpaq that it's having trouble installing. Maybe i should ask HP about this?

#20 ·
I also did not see the McAfee driver listed in your sys list from the reports, so it may have been removed after the blue screen crash.

Webcam drivers for in-built webcams typically do not cause problems even if they are old. I wouldn't worry about it for now. If it does bother you, and you would prefer the update installed, contacting HP support wouldn't be a bad step.

Hey guys, thought i'd drop a progress report for you. I have let the Webcam issue fall on the backlines for now, it's the least of the worries right now. I followed the steps for a clean boot, word for word. Loaded no problem. But then a memory flashed me by, namely, the blue screen on demand from using Intel's Driver Updater online. It was at the time, the only way to cause a blue screen and a BAD one at that. So, i thought, ah what the hell, why not try it. If it bluescreens, it means that the problem does not lie with 3rd party drivers, as they were all disabled due to the clean boot. If it doesn't, then it is strictly 3rd party drivers. Either way, there's a trail to follow. Low and behold, it does blue screen on me and yes, i managed to recover successfully without restoring, so i have logs for you to look through. It isn't the same kind of BSOD, it's a "KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" and further more points to a particular driver i've already commented on, cpudrv.sys.
Is this another problem, or a wolf in sheep's clothing (as it were). I am unsure how to proceed, so i would like to know if continuing with the clean boot elimination approach is worth doing, or if a new course of action is required.
Many thanks for your continued support and patience guys, you deserve medals. :thumb:

Crash caused by
Code:
     11336 02/06/2011 11:08:34 "C:\Program Files\SystemRequirementsLab\cpudrv.sys"

Comes installed as part of the Intel Driver checking process. Probably not due to the Intel software but something else on your system. I'll look closer at the crash to see if I can determine what underlying problem exists, but the problem is likely hardware related. I would suggest going through the hardware diagnostics given in my previous post.

ZoneAlarm was involved in the latest crash with the Intel Driver Update Utility. For the time being, remove ZoneAlarm and replace instead with Microsoft Security Essentials to see if the system is more stable.

1. Open ZoneAlarm on your computer. Double click on the ‘Z’ icon in your system tray in the lower right hand corner of your screen near your clock.

2. The ZA information screen should be open now. Click on Overview, and then click on Preferences.

3. Un-check the box called ‘Load ZoneAlarm at startup’ then close ZA.

4. Shutdown and reboot your PC. ZoneAlarm’s ‘Z’ icon should not appear in the system tray now after your system reboots.

5. Click ‘Start’ or your windows icon in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

6. Click Programs folder, Click ZoneAlarm folder

7. Mouse over the ‘Uninstall ZoneAlarm’ program and Right click and select Properties from the menu

8. Click on the box called Target. Scroll your cursor using the right arrow key on your keyboard to the end of the text in the box.

9. Once at the end of this text, Press the Space bar ONCE and they type: /clean

10. Click the OK button.

11. Now click Start, Click Programs folder, and Click ZoneAlarm folder.

12. Left Click the Uninstall ZoneAlarm program.

13. Take all the default prompts and questions, your system will reboot and now your old ZoneAlarm has been uninstalled.

Ah i was a little quick and saw your initial post instructing me to remove SystemRequirementsLab and try again. I did so, same result, BSOD. However, looking at your now edited post, i'll give FurMark a run and keep my eyes peeled for your investigation.
EDIT :- eehh.......Microsoft Security Essentials? I usually wouldn't think of using Windows own...well..anything. But for now, i'll give it a go.

#26 ·
Ack, damn my overactive trigger finger. From your earlier post, it told me to uninstall ZoneAlarm so i went right for the link you had posted, and ran that program. But then i saw you updated that post with that list of operations. Oops. The program seems to have uninstalled all of ZoneAlarm from my system anyway, no trace i can see. I've installed MSE and am running a scan right now.

#27 ·
No problem. I'm pretty sure the clean file you downloaded does those steps automatically, so there shouldn't be any problems.

Once the MSE scan is done, try the Intel Driver Update Utility again and see if it works this time. There may be some conflict with ZA, so if you like ZA, contact their support about the problems you have been having if the system is stable with ZA removed.
