BSOD, computer freezes, restarts, shuts down.

Hey

I am having trouble with my computer.
I built it a few months ago and I installed win 7 64-bit SP1 and the computer froze, got BSOD, rebooted and shut downed so I installed win xp 64bit SP3 and the problem was still there but just 1 or 2 times a day (with win 7 its many times a day) so I been living with that problem since.

So a few days ago I decided to buy win 7 64bit SP1 hoping the problem would disappear but it did not, its more frequent now like the first time I used win 7 64bit SP1.

After a freeze or shut down I have to turn off then on the PSU or else the monitor is in standby and the computer wont start.

So I was hoping for help, this problem is starting to really annoy me a lot !

I have uploaded the 3 dump files I´v got.

Well of course this ram is not listed for this board and though it means only it has not been tested with the board, I have never found Corsair not tested for a given board to work on it but as I said I have very poor luck with Corsair ram period. Of course the other place I go against the whole forum is I have no luck with Asus either and I can count on one hand the number of good boards I have had from them in recent years.
It would be easy for me because I am a system builder but I would replace the ram with Crucial and the board with a Gigabyte and then the hard drive to do it. Another thing I note is you are using an Nvidia video card with an ATi chipset and that seldom works well either but I would handle that by RMA the board (sell replacement on eBay) and replace it with a Gigabyte motherboard with an Nvidia chipset, but this means a lot of money to someone with a computer or two and I realize that. I can only tell you what I would do but actually doing what I suggest you will probably live longer if you get my drift!
Again I can only tell you my experience but as a system builder I used to use goodbrands I could get a great price on but since I limited myself to Crucial or GSkill ram (GSkill uses Micron ram also), Gigabyte, Biostar and AS Rock motherboards (only newest since they started making their own), XFX or Seasonic Psu's, all this silliness I used to go through as you are went away.

BIOS updates always carry some risk.
BIOS update through ASUS BUPDATER

BUPDATER is a DOS utility (runs under the DOS operating system). This utility is available for newer motherboards. The human interface is the same as for EZ Flash 2 (the text commands are the same as in AFUDOS).

Preparation:
- You will need the motherboard Support DVD.
- From the ASUS Download site, download, and if compressed extract, BUPDATER to a FAT/FAT32 formatted USB stick.
- Download and extract the BIOS file to the same USB stick as BUPDATER.
- Insert the Support DVD and the USB stick containing BUPDATER + the BIOS file.
- Reboot and press F8. Select boot from the Support DVD.

Update:
- When the Support DVD has booted and promted, select FreeDOS by entering its number.
- Press <Enter>
- At the FreeDOS prompt, type: A: and press <Enter> (or B: or D:, wherever you find BUPDATER)
- At the A:\> prompt, type: BUPDATER /PC /G and press <Enter>
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
From: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- EZ Flash 2 - the safest way to update BIOS

The above info may not be the latest or even work on your motherboard, perhaps a study of the ASUS forums or an email to ASUS Support would be the safest means to get the correct info for your situation.

I just saw your edit, do you normally have all the ram slots populated?

Updating BIOS looks difficult...Apparently quite risky too...
Maybe ill just get rid of all this crap and buy a built computer...who knows...I am just tired of all these problems. Never gonna build my own comp again.

Or just live with several BSOD per day, can that hurt the comp in the long run?

It'll play havoc with the file system at least.

Have you tried emailing ASUS support yet?

The hardware supplier, you could contact them for advice too.

I'd build my own over any pre-built system (and I've bricked motherboards in the past trying to update the BIOS) but I enjoy the challenge of seeking out quality parts that are compatible and at a good price (and troubleshooting) anyway.

If your motherboard is compatible with the EZ-Flash method, it's pretty straightforward and carries little risk compared to the earlier methods.

Managed to update BIOS now. It did not work to do it the way that ASUS forum said. I found something call "ASUS EZ Flash 2 utility" (I think) by chance in BIOS and I used it instead, 2 mins later BIOS was updated. Very easy. Well, lets wait and see if this helps.

I think I'm leaning heavily towards a bad drive here (otherwise possibly security software choking on the same file) - the last 2 dumps are identical, if it was a single driver, I'm almost certain that driver would be loaded in a different area of memory each boot.

Do you have another drive you could install Windows on to test if it has the same problems?

Ok I see. I only have 2 extern drivers, might be possible to install win on on of them.

Hello Kazzan!

The dump you've attached is a *50 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA bugcheck pointing to the culprit memory_corruption. Memory Corruption is usually caused by a 3rd party driver or a faulty piece of hardware, most of the times being the memory itself.

Two things I recommend. Please forgive me if you have already ran a Memtest, I am just joining in on your analysis, so I am unaware of current progress and tests that have already been performed :)

1. Memtest86+, download here. Once you've downloaded it, you can burn it to a CD or download the USB key provided by them. It does everything for you essentially, even formats the USB, installs the files... AND makes it bootable.

2. Driver Verifier if Memtest86+ shows up clean or if you've already run Memtest86+ to see if we can catch a possible 3rd party driver corrupting memory. Refer to this to get Driver Verifier set up.

Regards,

E-Peen

The comp just shut down... I contacted the store and told them everything I have tried, so they told me to send in my moderboard so they could check it. So I´ll probably do that and see if they can find anything faulty on it.

Thanks for all your help =)

Hmm after reading the agreements for sending it to them for testing, I am not gonna do it because it could cost quite some money if it appears to be 100% functionally. I dont think it is worth it, I am just gonna live with it and buy a new comp when I need it.

Thanks again for your help.
