BSOD but no minidumps
Hi,
My PC is about 2-3 years old, using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.
ACPI x86 based PC P5KPL series
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E6750 2.66GHz
2GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 460
D-Link DWA 125 Wireless 150 USB Adapter for router.
BSOD always occur when going into normal mode, and no minidumps are saved inside my root folder. I tried the steps required.
The only way to get into is safe mode with networking. Please help. Much appreciated =)

FWIW - I've seen a lot of issues with the Asus P5 series of boards. I usually recommend this:
- DO NOT use the AUTO setting for memory. Go to the RAM manufacturer's website and get the recommended settings for the RAM. Then set those settings manually in the BIOS
- one person with a 2009 BIOS has experienced success by updating the BIOS. This is dangerous and one simple mistake can easily damage your motherboard so it won't work. Be VERY, VERY CAREFUL!!!
- one person reports bad caps ( http://http://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=5 ) in this post: http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ml#post3476936

I do not recommend using wireless USB devices. Especially in Win7 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 - and using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7 drivers -
DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

SP1 isn't installed, please do the following:
Quote:
Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1
1. Visit the PC manufacturer's website and update ALL drivers. DO NOT use Windows Update or the "Update drivers" function of Device Manager.
2. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)
3. Visit Windows Update and get all updates
4. Visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates). Read these notes for installing SP1: Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center
5. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates

MSINFO32 shows these Problem Devices:
Quote:
Motorola SURFboard SB5101 USB Cable Modem USB\VID_07B2&PID_5101\0018C08D65AF This device is disabled.
Security Processor Loader Driver ROOT\LEGACY_SPLDR\0000 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.
Microsoft Loopback Adapter ROOT\NET\0000 This device is disabled.
|
Please enable the Surfboard, then uninstall it from your system.
Also, please enable the Loopback Adapter and remove it from your system
The Security Processor Loader device is usually present here if the system is infected - or if the damage from an infection wasn't completely repaired. Please run a few of these free scans to ensure that you're not infected: Free Online AntiMalware Resources
No BSOD's noted in the WER section of MSINFO32. This may be an indicator that the memory dumps are happening below the threshold that Windows recognizes (ie hardware)
This entry in your startups is suspicious:

Please scan for viruses.
Lot's of Critical events in the System Log file of Event Viewer. This is suggestive of a hardware problem also. Have you checked temperatures? Have you checked airflow inside the case?

Re: BSOD but no minidumps
Hi usama,
When you mentioned to go to PC manufacturer's website to update the drivers, does this means ALL (Audio, Video, Graphics,) but not the BIOS? And how do I know which update for which?
I have the driver scanner which tells me which driver is outdated only.
Will do a full scan using malware.
How do I enable the USB cable modem, uninstall it and remove it from my system? The weird thing is DLink router still works and my internet connection is still avaliable even if this is disabled. Why?
Hardware problem.. could it be Motherboard? Im still trying ways to do this, without throwing the PC out, Im on shortage of funds =(
Temperature is around 30 to 40 degrees C, not too sure. Ill have to get home and check it out.
THanks for your prompt assistance.

Re: BSOD but no minidumps
Yes, update all drivers (but NOT the BIOS) from the manufacturer's website.
Having older drivers is one of the most common reasons for the failure of a Service Pack to install (malware is the other most common reason).
I don't use tools like Driver Scanner as they just don't seem very reliable to me.
Why is the cable modem disabled? If you've deliberately disabled it, then it's better if you remove it from your system (and uninstall it's software). Here's a link that describes it: SURFboard SB5101 - Cable Modem - Overview - Motorola Mobility, Inc. USA
Do you have another router/modem that's sending the signal to the internet? Maybe you're using the signal from a neighbor's router/modem?
Hardware is only a possibility at this stage - don't worry about it until we've ruled everything else out. Check the temps because they are the most likely cause.
Mine is hooked up via ethernet, so I won't be of much help with the USB portion. This is one of the lesser worries - so don't stress over it until it's the only thing left that we haven't tried.

Re: BSOD but no minidumps
Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware using safe mode. Nothing detected on a full scan. Moving on to update drivers...

Re: BSOD but no minidumps
Temps were OK while you were running CPU-Z
I don't know if the system was under stress at that time.
Use SpeedFan or HWINFO (both free) to monitor temps - then stress the system to see what the temps get up to.

Re: BSOD but no minidumps
Hi,
Here's what I did;
Booted in safe mode with networking
Ran full scan using malware bytes
ran online scan using trend micro
removed Motorola SURFboard SB5101 USB Cable Modem using device mgr
removed Microsoft Loopback Adapter using devicer mgr
Now booted into normal mode, made a restore point but under USB cable modem there is an exclamation mark. I do have D-Link DWA-125 wireless 150 usb adapter though. Will report any BSOD if there is. Thanks.

From my Bios hardware monitor, I managed to take this down,
CPU temp 45deg, MB temp 43deg
Vcore - 1.376V
3.3V - 3.328V
5V - 5.094V
and 12V voltage according to bios is 12.038V
