Brand new build BSOD

4K views 42 replies 3 participants last post by  Junk87

So i just finished building a new pc, everything was fine for the first day. I stress tested all of the hardware and checked for errors. No problems. I then overclocked my processor and stabilized it (pretty easy on these new intel chips) and set up a game to download then went to bed.

When i woke up i was on the login screen and windows reported an unexpected shutdown.

I don't believe this is overclock related, i think it may be a driver or other hardware issue. One of the blue screen reports was something about a sata driver.

Ill run through the BSOD sticky steps now.

· OS - Windows 7 SP 1 64 bit
· Age of system- All new but the hard drives/dvd drive
· Age of OS installation -fresh format and reinstall with all updates
· CPU-i5 3570k
· Video Card-Radeon HD 6870
· MotherBoard-Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H
· Power Supply - Corsair TX650 watts

The second one lists the Marvel Sata controller driver as the cause.
mvs91xx.sys Mon Aug 8 23:05:23 2011
Check for a updated driver> GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z77X-UD3H (rev. 1.0)

Or consider using the Intel Storage controller ports instead of the marvel ports.

The first names ntkrnlmp.exe which is a windows process so is probably not the cause just the process left holding the bag by the sata controller driver.

The CPU shows current speed of 3403 did you OC the CPU or the ram?

I overclocked the CPU, the XMP? profile set my ram up to the correct frequency and timings. Speedstep is still enabled so it might not have picked up on that.

I had actually updated that driver not long after i posted here after seeing it in blue screen viewer.

I just tried to play Battlefield 3 and my computer locked up after 10 minutes i had to reset it. Didnt even get a blue screen just a black screen with no sound.

I dont understand how a computer can pass every stress test possible but cant run a simple game.

What do you mean by using intel ports instead?

#7 ·
Alright so my hardware passes tests individually, but when i run OCCT and stress both my CPU and video card at the same time my PC freezes without even getting a BSOD.

Something is clearly wrong here. I even reset my bios to default and ran the test again, it froze after 150 seconds.

The last dump is showing memory corruption, D/L Memtest+ burn it to a CD using a free program like Imgburn if you need one then boot from the CD to test the ram, let it run for at least 6 passes or until you see an error.

Reset the bios to defaults, turn verifier off.
D/L and run Hardware Monitor and run the stress test for a bit(not until it locks up), Alt+Tab back to HWM expand all the trees and use the Win7 snipping tool to grab a screen shot of the HWM window, post the screen shot using the paperclip button in the advanced message box(Go Advanced button).

Lets see what the temps and voltages look like under load.

Which stress test are you running?
The dumps show
  • BugCheck 3B, {c000001d, fffff960001443ff, fffff88004224d50, 0}
  • Probably caused by : memory_corruption
  • Followup: memory_corruption
Father down it shows
  • EXCEPTION_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc000001d - {EXCEPTION} Illegal Instruction An attempt was made to execute an illegal instruction.
  • FAULTING_IP:
  • win32k!xxxInterSendMsgEx+ed2
  • DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: CODE_CORRUPTION
  • BUGCHECK_STR: 0x3B
  • PROCESS_NAME: IntelBurnTestV
  • CURRENT_IRQL: 0
Basically if I'm reading it correctly the 32 bit program is attempting to execute code that is corrupt either from memory or the program itself(hard to believe)

I dont know if this is helpful to you at all, but before i built this computer i was getting daily blue screens on my old computer while gaming.

When i built this one i used the power supply 2x hard drives and dvd drive from my old one. The Corsair power supply was only a month old but the rest i had been using for 2+ years.

Both hard drives were formatted and checked for errors and i dont think a dvd drive could be causing this.

When the power supply was in my old computer it was hardly under any stress, it was a rather old system without a video card that required additional power from PCIE cables.

Its just a strange coincidence that im having the same problem with a brand new build.

Actually in this case that is correct, when looking for a bad stick testing one at a time is beneficial

Can a fan down bottom mounted PSU with a very small raised off space under the case overheat at all?
What case are you using? If there are not holes in the bottom of the case the PSU should be mounted with the fan pointing up.

Also how exactly do i burn this diagnostic test to a dvd? Its an exe file with a bunch of other files.
Which Diagnostic test?

I have a hyper 212 evo, do you think something is seated wrong?
Is the post in the center of the x brace in the hole in the center of the cooler?
