April 15 2010 Windows 7 updates, causing random BSOD loops...again?

Ive been looking around on other forums and had suddenly spotted this.

The updates that came through yesturday, i believe there are 7 of them:

Security update: KB978601
" ": KB979309
" ": KB979683
" ": KB980232
" ": KB981332
Windows malicious software removeable tool April 2010: KB890830
Update for office system 2007: KB981715

Ever since the installation of these updates i had gotten:

"Bios is not ACPI Compatible" BSOD (never EVER had this before)
0x0802 error about 3 times
Something about bad_pool_something something
Then the wireless got knocked offline.

Before i give any further information, i would like to know if any of you tech guys or if anyone else has experienced such issues from yesturdays updates?

I have system restored back to the point BEFORE the 7 updates were installed...and so far so good, had no issues what so over, internet fine, HDD's fine, system stability fine, etc.

Could it be possible the updates has caused random BSOD loops...AGAIN like it did back in febuary of this year with dodgey updates?

Or is this a sheer co-incidence? lol, so far it seems to not be, as i repeat, system stability is currently optimal.

The updates have currently again been downloaded...but i dont DARE install them again just in case ><!

Thanks in advance for any clarification, I will provide more system and error specific detail, should that be required :).

Hi -

I myself have not experienced such, but have seen a few threads similar in nature related to Security Windows Updates.

Run through the steps in this post, specifically the Windows Updates Readiness Tool -

http://www.techsupportforum.com/1952419-post8.html

I would also suggest that you re-validate your OS installation at the Microsoft WGA site.

WGA --> www.microsoft.com/genuine

Be sure to validate the OS and Office, if applicable.

Although I am not a big believer in coincidences, I find the troubles you are having and the date of April 15 to be just that. :)

Filing extensions are available to both you and Microsoft if need be!

Thank you for your reply but i am a little confused...

That thread is all about vista, the links for microsoft site talk only of vista too...i did up steps up to that point but am a little confused...

Should i download the vista service packs or not?

The Windows Update Readiness tool is about Vista but ive seem to of ran that anyway

My system is valid luckerly, i installed the KB947821 hotfix that was on there but yeah...

Where should i go from here? these damn updates have redownloaded and i reeeeeeeally dont wanna restart the comp for fear of it breaking.

I did /SFC and the disk cleanup but now what...go ahead and install these updates and hope for the best? lol

I see you are running windows XP/SP3 as I am. Your post is in the wrong sub-forum, this is the Windows Vista/Windows 7 Support forum.......

I had no issue at all with the latest 9 updates currently offered for April 15th on any of my systems all running Windows Home Editon SP/3.

jcgriff2 is offline, will be back in a while I would expect so will most likely move your post to the correct sub-forum and carry on with his instructions for you.

This link cannot hurt for you to browse until jcgriff2 returns to proceed.

Also suggest you may like to do the following:

Re-register the windows update components. This may help fix a
corrupt installer

1. Click on Start and Run,
2. Type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL and press Enter.
3. Should get the message DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded, Click OK.
4. Repeat for each of the following:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

5. Reboot then try Windows Update again.

kind regards,

No no no!!!!

I AM RUNNING WINDOWS 7...why would i post about a windows 7 issues if i was on XP SP3??

Sorry...i just havent updated my details on my profile, i am on windows 7 lol, ignore the information there ill update it now, it helps to read the post? thanks :p.

Also that link has nothing to do with my problem...its not a fact of repeated updates, its updates causing looping BSODs.

Also, it doesnt help me, you saying you have not had any issues, as the other guy stated other people have, and on other forums i see more and more of these posts cropping up regarding similar issues but diff BSODs

Now im more confused, do you want me to do those steps anyway or are those steps for you thinking im on XPSP3?

Im on windows 7, i have not misposted, sorry for the confusion.

#6 ·
I apologize for confusion here - I have no idea where I got Vista from! No idea.

Do you have an internet security product installed in your Windows 7 system., i.e., NIS, N360, KIS, McAfee, etc...?

#7 ·
Hey Griff.

Lol its ok.

And yeah i got ESET SS for windows 7, spybot search and destroy and the windows defender thing that comes with windows update, i did a full virus scan before and after and a spyware and a windows scan...nothing showed up.

Why do you ask? I assume you are suggesting I disable them during update install? Ive never ever EVER needed to that for anything ever with ESET, ESETs very good and never breaks anything like that haha.

But yes sorry im waffling on, what is your thinking atm?

#8 ·
Please run msinfo32 and save as an NFO file -
START | type msinfo32 | save with default NFO file ext

Zip it up and attach to post.

I aksed about those apps b/c they have 3rd party firwalls, which is a likely culprit for lack of Windows Updates.

Do make sure that you ran the clean mgr and the readiness tool. Something is blocking/ causing the looping.

Also, please get the Windows Updates log from the \windows folder. Add it to the zip. It may contain additional clues.

Regards. . .

#9 ·
Yeah I get what you mean but as i said, ESETs auto filter setting has never ever caused an issues with updates in the nearly 3 years ive used it, but fair enough...with windows 7 in may of hit a snag.

Yeah i did a cleanup, left the log and my old install files just in case, cleaned the rest.

I ran the thingy update too and it installed a hot fix for me.

Anywho, see attached as requested the NFO and WindowsUpdate log files :)

Thanks again in advance.

BTW its just BSOD again, but i hadnt installed the updates:

Memory_Management/8E/7E errors, 1st caused during operation, second 2 on boot up. Yesturday in crashed with svchost.exe critical error at 5am randomly...and again it gave the same BSOD's as i mentioned in my first posts, the ACPI thing and before boot the "overclocking failed!!!" error...I havent overclocked anything!!! all is stock!!! ***!! :upset: damn im annoyed...

I have no idea what is going wrong here now...

Uploaded the recent .dmp file for you, see attached (im currently in safemode now)

Help? lol.

Could it be possible I need a Bios upgrade? Maybe my power supply is dodgey, maybe the CPU is going...lol maybe everything has started to die inside my computer without me knowing haha xD! Knowing my luck i wouldnt be surprised tbh ¬¬. I really hope not though and I somehow really doubt its a hardware issue causing, what really does seem to be...a different BSOD each and every time :4-dontkno.

Im starting to get a reeeeeeeeally bad feeling that my computer was showing these errors anyway, and im blaming the updates seeing as they just appeared. But it cant be...simply because ive never had such inconsistent and random BSOD's ever before to just suddenly popup after april 15th.

Do you need any more scans or files uploaded? I think a total dissection may be needed to find the issues lol.

EDIT! (sorry for mass posting, u should extent the 15 minute edit time :p)

OH I JUST REMEMBERED.

Yeah...after the frist case of bsods that i mentioned in my first post...i also forgot to mention that it effected my BIOS!!

It had switched around the "boot device" harddrive :4-dontkno?!? The 500gb one was first, and the 80gb one was second (the one which contains my OS install) so i was then getting "boot device not detected, please select correct one" which luckerly i remembered how to fix...so i switched them back over and all is well.

Now...this is what makes me think these damn updates have buggered something up internally...its messing with my BIOS now? Jesus Microsoft WTH xD!

That would be at your antivirus solution and/or 3rd party firewall currently in use. I'd completely uninstall those, one at a time, to see how things go. If good, the great. If not, we can troubleshoot further.

Unrelated, but I'd update to the new version of Rivatuner for the sake of it.

This driver is from 1996! and should be updated or removed from the system:
Code:
giveio giveio.sys Wed Apr 03 22:33:25 1996

#13 ·
Huh?? Av causing issues? are you perfectly sure?? Hmmm...

And also...

1996?!?!!? No no no, rivatuner wasnt even around 14 years ago, I have the most recent drivers for that lol, version 2.24. its more like 14 weeks old rather than 14 years old.

Thats not whats it for mostly anyway, its more likely for speedfan and other thinks, 1996 is more than like a misread in the data creating, and i wouldnt remove this i believe the system uses it all the time according to the info ive pulled, last used on 3rd of march this year though...hmmm

Anymore professional advice? I seriously seriously doubt my AV/firewall is to blame here, like it said its never ever EVER happened before so why now?

#14 · (Edited by Moderator)
Uninstall the av and see how it goes is the only thing I can tell you.
Also, that giveio.sys was not implied to have anything to do with your Rivatuner.

Your current Rivatuner has a driver as such:

Code:
RivaTuner32 RivaTuner32.sys Tue Jul 17 15:13:33 2007

P.S. You couldn't pay for better support. I learned from the best of the best...H2S04 mainly, and Usasma as well.

Uninstall the av and see how it goes is the only thing I can tell you. When your machine is fixed, I'd appreciate being "raised" to professional status. :sigh:

Umm, you clearly said and i quote:

"Unrelated, but I'd update to the new version of Rivatuner for the sake of it.

This driver is from 1996! and should be updated or removed from the system:"
So from that, one is to deduct your reasoning to be solely to that, seeing as you said to update rivatuner when it is, anyway apologies, but moving on:

I use that for rivatuner and speedfan and other diagnostic tools, im not removing it, updating it fine, how do i update it? Cant see anything on google.

Hey look, there's no need to get all funny with me mate, but id rather have advice from the person who is taking my case, atm that is Griff.

It doesnt matter if you have 1000000000 years of computer knowledge, i would still rather be instructed by the people on this site, dealing with my case, that is currently Griff.

Ive been told before not to listen to other users input and only stay on track with what THEY instruct to ME, if Griff can validate your input first then I will go ahead, otherwise i'm staying put for now.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, it is no mean a jab at you or whatever your level of expertise is, but you seem rather new here so my trust isnt going to be rested upon you over the official tech guys.

No offense intended, i'm only stating my reasoning, but thanks anyway :)

#16 ·
I hear ya. But honestly, Griff may or may not tell ya to uninstall the av. (He definitely was on to it though, no doubt!) In my experience, memory management errors are caused only by av or faulty ram.

You don't have faulty ram.

Please uninstall the av if only as a test.

#17 ·
xD!!!

Ok then ¬¬, im in safemode atm should i un-install it in here? Im not sure if ill be able to boot into normal mode lol. Then wait for how long though? It could be literally any time.

But just so you know, that isnt the only BSOD im having, that was just one of many random ones the past couple of days since the updates ><.

#18 ·
lol

Ya. You could probably uninstall from there, if it lets you. If not, boot to normal and uninstall from there. Either method will not cause it to be unbootable.

If you get further bsod after removal, please post and we can have a look. I am guessing all issues will be resolved though.

#19 ·
No i mean..im not sure if im able to physically boot in normal mode atm if it is something else, as i wasnt able to before this.

ANYWHO................

Ok ill do that, see if i can get on normal mode for a while and we'll see, cheers.

#20 ·
Ok so like i thought...it wouldnt boot ¬¬, so luckerly "last known config" worked lol, so here i am now in normal mode, ESET is uninstalled. What you reckon now? Go ahead and install these updates now or do something else first or what?

Dunno how long it will last ya know...i can almost sense a BSOD coming any second now :p.

#22 · (Edited)
Lol...just as i was typing this?

BSOD: 0x0000001A Memory Management ¬¬

I knew it wasnt the anti-virus!

Cant find any log of it in event viewer apart from an info thing saying: "software protection service has stopped"...

Now what lol? Upload my dump file again? xD!

Getting quite a few DNS errors though...but this BSOD was at 17:27-17:28 today and i cant find anything :S grrrr.

Yes, because it's possible the driver(s) to the a/v were not removed because of a faulty uninstaller, which is common. Or, we could see the "new" issue this way too.

Hi guys. . .

For info, giveio.sys = SpeedFan. It is fine; hoever, make sure you have v4.40 installed.

SF v4.40 --> http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Windows Update log not super informative, but wanted to check - is this your system specs w/ 2007 BIOS?

Oh sorry yes ofc, (and yeah speedfan is 4.40 :))

Just had another BSOD on memory management

Oh and yeah that looks like it, i'll post the info on the page for you :)

- Os = Windows 7 Professional
- x86 (32-bit)
- Originally XP SP3
- I bought it (it was the UPGRADE version, which required a previous install of windows, in this case it was XP PRO SP3 -> W7 PRO
- All components are of a rage of ages:
-> HDD's are 3 months, and the 80gb is about 2 years old
-> GFX card is about 2 years old (8800 GTS 512MB G92)
-> RAM is about...a year and a bit old
-> Motherboard is about 2-2.5 years old
-> CPU is about 2-2.5 years old
-> Power Supply is about 6-9 months old
-> CPU fan is about 2 years old
-> Bios is....uuuh...no idea >< old i think lol, ive never updated it my self, so i would guess 2-3 years here
· Age of OS installation = well i last re-instaleld XP from scratch about 3 months ago, but windows 7 atm is...nearly 1 month and a half old
· Q6600 2.4 QUAD
· 8800 GTS 512MB G92
· P5K-E Wireless adapter w/ it
· Power Supply - TruePower Quattro 850W
. 2x1GB Ballistix RAM

Also @ torrent

Lol...ESET are extremely trust worthy mate, it has un-installed.

Anyway, i went though and all traces of it are currently removed.

Ive just had BSOD cycle again:

Memory_Management 0x1A
The "your bios is not ACPI complient, please update it" BSOD again
0x7E again

:sigh:...:4-dontkno

Could this be something REEEEEEALLY simple? Like theres an application on my computer using too much memory? Not enough memory? I use firefox...could that be an issue? all i was doing before was using firefox (im back in safe mod now btw since normal is STILL unstable). Could it be my pagefile is messed up? Could it be that I DO need to run a BIOS update? Or could it be RAM...(i really hope not...) AGAIN causing issues, get memtest?

EDIT:

Griff? Small issue lol...i was running your program in step 2...all was going well until I THINK it got to scanning/ or w.e it was doing, drivers (i think, either on or just after that stage) and then...it just BSOD again with the error:

0x00000024

(NTFS.SYS)

And some more code again ><!

I have a feeling that wasnt supposed to happen? Or is that a good sign? Lol im so confused as to what the issue is now...its gone WAAAAAAAY past it being updates...the scan didnt complete and i daren't do it again in case it fails again but...ill try it again >< hopefully it wont crash =\.

EDIT:

Yay it worked! There ya go Griff, update me as ASAP please :)

As I had suspected, this ESET drivers are still on the system. You can go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers

and delete these manually if you've already previously uninstalled ESET the "normal" way.

Code:
epfw epfw.sys Mon Nov 16 02:45:46 2009
Epfwndis Epfwndis.sys Thu Apr 09 08:42:36 2009
epfwwfp epfwwfp.sys Mon Nov 16 02:45:45 2009
You'd probably be well off getting this utility driver updated from your motherboard manufacturer's site as well, under utilities section in downloads usually. Goes by the name ATK0110, Probell or similar. This is most likely unlrelated too, though. Just good practice:

Code:
ASACPI ASACPI.sys Thu Aug 12 22:52:52 2004

#29 ·
Bump

Griff you managed to have a look at anything yet?

@ Torrent

Ok so i managed to download that utility driver of ASACPI.sys which is now updated, should i delete the copy in "DriverStore\FileRepository\asacpi.inf_x86_neutral_cfd4e6b362d8579f" or leave it there?

I was wondering, do you think it would be a good idea to download ALL of the updates on the ASUS site for my motherboard or not?

Atm im still unsure of the stability of the system, im going back to halls to uni today so i cant test "long running" atm, + there's still no direct proof eset was to blame lol.

Let me know what you guys think I should do next, thanks a lot so far for ur help atm guys :).

Hi -

Yes. . . ideas forthcoming....

Bugcheck 0x24 = NTFS file system -- HDD

Run chkdsk /r

Update the Asus AI Suite ATK0110 mobo utility driver immediately. The 2004/ 2005 versions have BSOD'd Windows 7 systems to death for many months now.

Asus driver updates --> http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx

ATK0110 driver Download --> Motherboard--> Utility--> Tools

Get Asus updated 1st, then chkdsk.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

.

DIT: Just noticed you said Asus ATK0110 updated -- what is current timestamp on ASACPI.sys... 2009?

JC

.

#31 ·
Hiya, yeah ASACPI.sys is now 2009 :).

Should that be the only thing to update? or should i download and update ALL things for my motherboard on the ASUS site? For example BIOS/BIOS-Utilities/Chipset etc? or are they ok as they are lol.

Oh and HDD? Hmmm...i hope not lol xD! But yes ok, ill run another diskcheck lol but both seem to be fine.

So run run chkdsk /r now IN system or in safe mode or recovery console?

Thanks again.

#32 ·
Glad to hear asacpi.sys has left XP world!

Update any and all Asus mobo drivers that you can find.

chkdsk runs on boot-up as the volume has to dismount. So it does not matter where you issue the command from.

Hey guys, so everything seems to be running fine atm, not had any BSODS for 5 days straight ^^, dunno what fixed lol.

Anyway Griff, I need your help with something

I just ran a "system health report" and it found a couple of things:

One error that says:

"The device, Standard PS/2 Keyboard, is reporting "tv_ConfigMgrErr24". This device will not be available until the issue is resolved. The Plug and Play ID for this device is ACPI\PNP0303\4-23F9C1E3-0."

What the heck is this? something to do with my keyboard? I use a USB keyboard lol, SAITEK Eclipse in fact...do you have any idea what this is about?

Another couple of things:

"Motherboard Device Configured Fail Count: Tests: 22 Failed: 1 Details: Motherboard devices"

Huh? Lol...yes...VERY helpful...not ><! Do you know how i can access more information about what this device is? Ive scanned device manager and its not in there, unless its to do with my on board HD audio? That is the only thing i have disabled or "not configured" as i use X-FI Xtreme Gamer card

Another:

"PlugAndPlay Device Configured Fail Count: Tests: 180 Failed: 2 Details: PlugAndPlay devices."

Again...that REALLY doesnt tell me anything, I need more info somehow :4-dontkno

Unless, those things ive quoted are just the odd errors regarding the PS/2 keyboard and my disabled on board audio card then I dunno...

Any ideas? It may be nothing but, just wanted to be sure.

EDIT:

Btw about the motherboard updates? Im in the UK so im on the UK ASUS site and look here: http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=dFAMIWrZWGgB1GuJ#

There is only 6 listed updates (1 which i already have)

But on the US site there is over 40?!

I assume i use the updates i find on my regions website and install the 6 listed there, correct (except the audio drivers)?
