Help! Something downloaded and Cant find it

1K views 9 replies 2 participants last post by  Omerr

Last nite something tried downloading to my system. I THOUGHT I denied it permission, but immediately A squared IDE started popping alerts whenever I opened any browsers or Outlook Express. (Since I thought I had denied it access to download, I didnt really pay attention to the warning).

So far nothing has tried accessing the internet (i.e., no Zone Alarm requests) but I do assume something "wrong" is here. Here is my Hijackthis log:

Hello and welcome to TSF

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option. Please do NOT change any of those settings until we finish the fixing process.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for the following service:

Snoop Free Service (SnoopFreeSvc)

Double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for each one (If they still exist)(You must kill them one at a time).

C:\WINDOWS\SnoopFreeUI.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SnoopFreeSvc.exe

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...ttp://www.yahoo.com/search/ie.html

O16 - DPF: FWDCab - http://www.fwdnet.net/fwdtalk/FWDCab12.CAB
O23 - Service: Snoop Free Service (SnoopFreeSvc) - Unknown owner -
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SnoopFreeSvc.exe

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\SnoopFreeUI.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SnoopFreeSvc.exe

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

If you have a fast internet connection (Broadband), run an online scan at Trend Micro or RAV Antivirus.
Please select the “autoclean” option when using Trend Micro.

Please scan again with HijackThis to get a new log.
Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in 'y' if you agree. The 'result.txt' file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. You don't need to post the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Now give us a new HijackThis Analyzer log so we can make sure your system is clean.

Hi Omerr

I did all you asked-- however snoopfree was a program i downloaded after this thing hit. So I first uninstalled it, and all the reg entries for it were gone.

Here is the Hijack analyzer file.. it appears that yahoo stuff all came back altho i did delete it all in safe mode per your request. When I signed back in normal mode I got alerts from Win Patrol and Spybot that my homepage had been changed, I told both to accept changes. However, My Yahoo was still my home page and the Yahoo Tool bar remained which struck me as strange.

Anyway, here is the hjt analyzer log:

Hello again :)

Please go through my instructions as it comes to “snoopfree” carefully, it is on your PC.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SnoopFreeUI] SnoopFreeUI.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {12345678-1234-1234-1234-1234567890AB} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: FWDCab - http://www.fwdnet.net/fwdtalk/FWDCab12.CAB
O23 - Service: Snoop Free Service (SnoopFreeSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\SnoopFreeSvc.exe

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=easytouse. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to 'System Testing' on the menu and choose 'Full System Scan'. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies. If you have problems copying the text, look (or search) for a file named scandump.txt and see if that has the alarms - post that here.

Now give us a new HijackThis Analyzer log, along with TDS-3 log, so we can make sure your system is clean.

I am Sorry

I never ran a second Analyze this Log so that's why snoopsvc and yahoo showed up on the Anaylyzer log last time. Forgot a step!

Well when I went back into the registry everything was gone but I did a new analyzer log:

TDS logs show nothing and so I didn't post them here (actually ran a TDS scan earlier and it found a test trojan I'd downloaded (sort of like an Eicar) and flagged it, but also ID'ed it as not harmful.. very impressive.

Hope this helps and sorry I screwed up yesterday!

First possible sign something wrong?

I now cannot access my help and support databse. I double checked to ensure the service was turned on-- even turned it off then on again (with appropriate reboots) and it still will not come up.

Not sure this is a related problem or not but letting you know in case.

Hi Again

I had run Reg Seeker last nite before I shut down, and so most of the entries you flagged were already gone.

Also, the hosts file entry was added by TDS (I checked it as soon as I got alerted to the change and checked the address immediately-- it was their website). But, I still went through all the steps (just alerting you to that host entry for your own reference).

Here is the latest Analyzer log:
