I had a similar problem as several people in the past with a virus or something similar. The issue is the exact same problem those had with thier wave volume muting and invisible ads playing, iexplorer in the processes even though I never use it. Also, there were a lot of dllhosts taking up a huge amount of my memory. All these issuse happened at the same time when the volume cut out the first time. BUT NOW, my computer will NOT EVEN TURN ON! I followed the directions to get the logs you all need to the letter. Once GMER was done scanning there where no icons on my desktop and no explorer. I assumed it was a glitch so I turned off my PC and turned it back on. AND IT WILL NOT TURN ON! It just beeps over and over and will not do anything! Needless to say I am very upset. All I can hope is this is a fluke and you all are not out to ruin people's computers. Please respond to me whether or not you have any answers. I deserve that much, I think. If you all are legit, you really should put a warning on those instructions that GMER can mess you up bad. I doubt it was the virus. It must have been GMER. I am utterly devaststed because as a musician that makes everything on his computer. I have just lost everything.................. 6 years of work, poof. I know you said back up your data, but you didn't say GMER could be a problem. I, also, have no way of doing so anyway. Please respond. I am not trying to be a jerk, though I would have every right to be at this point. Please, respond in some way.

gmer didn't ruin your machine. I have run gmer on thousands of machines, and never seen gmer ruin one.

gmer does not make changes to your machine, it only reads parts of the registry.

While we try our hardest to avoid them, accidents do happen. With today's malware being as it is, neither Tech Support Forum nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss of your data. You're following the instructions given at your own risk. We recommend that you back up any data that’s important to you beforehand, just in case the worst happens.
If you'd followed our instructions to the letter, you'd still have your data.

Do you have access to another computer and a CD burner?

If you are running XP Home...
  • Download recovery_console_cd.zip to your desktop.
  • Extract it to its own folder(Next > Next > Finish).
  • Next, go to this Microsoft link to download the floppy disk setup package XP Home and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click the floppy disk setup package and rename it to Bootdisk.exe then drag it into the recovery_console_cd folder.
  • Double-click the RecoveryCD.bat file and follow the prompts to burn a CD that will allow you to boot to the recovery console.
  • You'll be given a DOS window. Press any key then click 'Start'.
  • Let me know when you have created the CD.
