So I'm going thru the fuel system on a Briggs 10hp generator engine because of age/varnish issues. Engine is a 19G412-1180-E2.

The carb is okay, I rebuilt that a couple years ago. My question is about the fuel pump. How can I test it with a non-running engine? This pump is connected to the crankase via 1/4" tube, but I don't know if it's powered by crankcase vacuum or pressure. I'm used to smaller engines with gravity fuel systems, so can someone explain the operation of this type of fuel pump? The part number for the pump is 496257. Thanks guys. -Dave

It's powered by pressure and vacuum from the crankcase. If you have a pressure gauge you can connect it to the discharge nipple, when you pull the engine over it should register pressure on the gauge. Or just put gas in the tank and pull the engine over a bit, gas should start coming out.
