Ok so, I am working on building a new gaming pc, and I just wanted to run some specs by everyone and see if anyone has anything to add, change and any other help that they might think of. As I said this computer will be used exclusively for gaming/streaming and maybe a touch of video editing but nothing hardcore.
So far the hardware I have decided on is as follows
CPU: Intel i7-4790K
Cooler: Corsair Hydro H110 Liquid Cooling CPU Cooler (more on this later)
MOBO: ASUS Maximus VII Hero (preferred, but more on this later as well)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 2133MHz Corsair Vengeance
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 EVGA SC
Power Supply: 800 Watts adequate?
Storage: 128GB SanDisk SSD/1TB SATAIII 7200rpm HDD Combo
Optical Drive: LG 14X Internal Blu-ray Burner, BD-RE, 3D Playback DVD+RW Combo Drive
For my Monitor I will be trying to find a 24-27 inch LCD Display with 144Hz refresh rate/1ms response time (1920x1080 is fine) somewhere around 200-300 dollars, wherever I can find the best deal.
Keyboard and Mouse are yet to be determined along with a webcam and headset.
Ok so my questions are
1.) What case should I use? I want something with plenty of room so I can easily customize and upgrade in the future, and preferably with HAF as my liquid cooling will be a closed loop for the CPU, not a custom circuit to the rest of the components.
2.) Will the H100 be good enough for my CPU? I plan to eventually overclock it but not to the point where I'm pushing it beyond its limits. And if it will be good enough then the case I use will need to have 280mm support.
3.) For my MOBO, I have been seriously thinking about using the ASUS Hero but needless to say it isn't cheap. Should I get it anyway or are there other good boards I could use. Yes the MOBO isn't the most important component as far as speed goes but it is a factor as I want good speed through the board and I want to avoid bottlenecking. I hear good and bad things about other brands like MSI and Gigabyte but I went with what I know. Any help in this area is appreciated.
4.) Is the power supply good at 800 watts or should it be more/less with overclocking in mind. I may end up running a second GTX 980 in SLI in the future and if I do will it still be enough?
5.) Will I need a dedicated sound card? I have done some browsing and everyone agrees that unless one is doing serious sound editing they are rarely necessary.
6.) What am I missing? Will I need extra cooling options? GPU fans or fan controllers, hard drive fans? Any of my parts need to be swapped for something else? Something to be improved? Will the z97 chipset board instead of x99 bite me in the *** later when upgrades roll around? As I said this is for gaming/streaming only and nothing like hardcore editing so the 6core Intel processors (like the i7-5820) for the x99 boards are not only expensive but also somewhat wasted.
Anyways, if you have something to add please feel free to post. All tips and criticism are much appreciated thank you
