Hi all.
I need to find a converter or something that will go from regular 3.5mm jack headphones into optical audio input. I want to connect my headphones to TV so I listen audio through them so I dont wake up my wife Thing is my TV LG37LF65 has only one audio output and its optical.
What am I looking for here? Need a name so I can find and buy it.
Thanks for fast reply. Im not 100% sure. It might be it. I see its only converter, does optical cabel go with it or need to buy separately? So I need optical cabel from TV into that box, and then just connect headphones into it?
The linked DAC is only an example of the type of device you require. That particular one does ship with an optical cable to connect it to your TV. Plug your headphones into the DAC.
Please note I cannot speak for the quality of that specific device. Good quality audio DACs can easily run into the hundreds of $$.
The two plug adapters you linked will do . . . nothing. The optical output, by definition uses light for signal transmission. Your headphones take an electrical signal. A powered, active device (such as the DAC) is required to convert between the two.
I looked at your manual's info closely and what I thought was the standard audio out was actually audio in, so my suggestion above won't work without a converter. I have no idea why LG doesn't include a headphone jack with its product. Others are just as incredulous as to the lack of standard audio outputs. Searching the tech forums, I find that LG's response is to purchase a HiFi device, output audio to it and then plug headphones into the HiFi device's audio output. This is what gcaven mentioned above. From said device you would use the adapter that I mentioned to allow connection of headphones.
Here is an example of a cheap unit that would probably give you sound; however, you may be disappointed with its audio quality. Quality units will run $75-$100 or more.
Well, problem here is that both my LG TV and PS3 I have use optical audio connection (not sure if PS3 has something else to use for audio output). And Im on really tight budget so can't look for quality, just something that will get the job done.
So just adapter won't work? One MPR linked is not too expensive, and if it gives me something like average sound it'll be ok for a while.
