Just recently purchased a Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT from newegg for my old Dell optiplex GX 260 (PCI slot). Having a good deal of issues installing it, some ive never had before. Every time i plug my monitor into the graphics card, the monitor refuses to properly turn on. Just stays at a blank black screen. My onboard video card is disabled and i've removed as many old video drivers as i could find. (Driver Sweeper refused to delete some for some reason). Tried just about everything and now im wondering if my motherboard is even compatible? Here's my motherboard information ..
Chipset is Intel.. / Chipset Model is i845G / Chipset Revision is A1 / South Bridge Vendor is intel... Southbridge Model Number is 82801DB (ICH4) Southbridge Revision is 01.
Would seriously appreciate any help at all. Couldnt get any from Dell and i cant find the answer online anywheres. Thanks alot in advance.
Is the bios set so the primary video output is "pci" and not "onboard". Also , some motherboards a pci videocard has to be in the correct pci slot to work. It's usually the top pci slot or pci slot closest to the cpu.
Thanks for the reply Emosun.. I've actually went into my bios multiple times and the only options for primary graphics are "auto" and "onboard". So i left it on auto. I dont think it's detecting the new card since i cant run it with the monitor plugged into it. =/
Well i put the new card in the slot for the old card (and the old card was working fine). There is an extra PCI slot i've never used but the card's bracket is to big to fit into the slot. Also, i've ran driver sweeper again in safe mode, and it erased every single old driver file. There are none left now. Driving me insane. =/ The way i usually have to install my cards is drivers first, card second. But with Nvidia, this isnt an option. It will only install the drivers if it detects a card thats been installed.
The previous card was a Radeon 9250. It was working fine, just not good enough. Was really old. So i purchased the new card. I found a thread on how to force install nvidia drivers.. But its for a damn macbook. Got all the way to the last step, but theres no NVAM.inf text file to replace.
Well we have over 40 teams members in the hardware section alone so usually every thread gets a reply the same day.
The previous gpu still works ok? I would almost just say it's a comptibility issue between the old motherboard and newer pci card.
If you can install both the 9250 and 9500 at the same time you may be able to see in windows if the 9500 is even being detected , course leave the drivers for the 9250 uninstalled.
Damn i really hope not. Tired of having to use older PCI cards. Wish i could get an answer from dell to just straight up tell me if its compatible or not. Been trying to find the best PCI card for awhile.
But i can try that.. so install the old radeon first, (not the drivers), and then pop in the new nvidia card?
I mean yesterday i actually got it to the point where the graphics card was actually plugged in and the computer was on and working fine, but the monitor wasnt plugged into the card. And the CPU wasn't finding any new hardware.
Any chance i got shipped a dead card? From newegg?
Well when i booted it up, the onboard was disabled that time. Thought i got somewhere. But like i said, the monitor wasnt plugged into the card. I was merely trying to see if my computer would detect it w/o the monitor plugged in to install the drivers.
I guess ill just send it back to newegg and get a card a few steps below to see what happens.
Trying to get a hold of a friend first to try it out in his computer. That way i know for sure if its DOA. Is there ANY chance at all it has to do with my monitor? Video card to strong for it?
Also, whenever i have the card in anymore since i erased all the old drivers, with the monitor plugged into the computer, the screen won't even boot up. Even with the onboard graphics disabled.
And im sure this has nothing to do with my video card.. but in the quick install guide they shipped me, it says "Plug in card power" Plug in the matching power cable as shown when your new card has a power connector and then attach the free end to your system's power supply.
I'm about 99.9% sure my video card doesnt qualify for that step. It doesnt seem to have any extra spots on it for a power connector.
Just tried it on a 10 year old compaq's motherboard.. worked flawlessly. Tried it on a new monitor, same problem. Tried a PCI slot on my motherboard ive never used and that didnt work either.
Find it so hard to believe a 10 or so year old compaq is compatible with it yet my 6 or 7 year old dell isnt. Lol.
Ah well, thanks alot for your help. Just calling Dell to find out what cards are supported by my motherboard now.
