Display freezes

I have a problem with my PC where after some use the screen completely freezes and the computer is unusable until I reset it. This has been happening for a few months now with some days without any problems and others where I had to restart several times.

Symptomes:
Display is frozen
Sound (if any was playing) keeps playing
I can access the shared folders

What I already did (all negative):
Tested ram with memtest86+ 4 passes
Ran Prime95 for 3 hours
Swapped my newer GTX 1080 with my older GTX 780
Stress tested both cards

I can force the problem if I play a demanding Game like GTA 5. Then it will take like 30 min and it freezes.

PC Specs:
ASUS P9X79 deluxe
i7-4930k @ 3.9GHz
2x 8GB Corsair Dominator @ 1866MHz C9
Zotac GTX 1080 Amp Extreme
Corsair Ax 860
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
Noctua NH D15
Win 10 Pro 14393

Hi, thanks for the answer!

The PC won't recover on it's own. I have to perform a hard reset or a power cycle.

I'm running the latest firmware on my SSD (DXM06B0Q) and the latest drivers for my GPU (376.33).

My SSD's S.M.A.R.T. shows no abnormal values.

Now my temperatures:

Under stress my CPU almost never exceeds 57C.
All other system temperatures also stay quite cool at under 35C.
When running a Furmark stress test the GPU temperatures usually settle around 83C-85C (GTX 1080) and 77C -80C (GTX 780). Of course only one GPU is in the system at any time.

The Processor won't exceed 57C during a Prime95 stress test.As my prozessor is not overclocked and has a very powerful cooler this is quiet normal.

The high temperature of my 1080 is also normal as it has a very large factory overclock and this is it's factory temp target. At idle the temperatures of both tested cards are around 35C.

The crashes happen not only while gaming they also happen randomly anytime while doing nothing or having a very light load like browsing or doing office stuff.
I only mentioned GTA 5 as this is the fastest way to reliably reproduce the effect. Other games also make these crashes happen quiet quickly.

Here is also my cooling setup:
2 120mm Corsair fans in the front blowing in
1 140mm Noctua fan in the top blowing in
1 140mm Noctua fan in the back blowing out.

All intakes have filters that I clean monthly.

Thanks for your quick answer!

I haven't thought about that yet so I followed that guide and reinstalled my drivers. After another restart I started up GTA 5 and it took 10 min and I had a frozen image. So that didn't work.

During that freeze I tried to shut down my PC using some shortcuts I mapped to my keyboard and that didn't do a thing. I'm starting to doubt that it's a problem with my GPU or its drivers but I have no clue what else could be wrong .

I checked with my motherboard manufacturer for updates and didn't find any. I also checked my SSD again and it is still up to date (I used Samsungs Magician). GPU Drivers are also up to date (using NVidia Experience).

I also checked for any updates to my peripherals:

Keyboard (Corsair K95 RGB) is up to date according to the Corsair Utility Engine and at v2.05
Mouse(Logitech G700s) is also up to date according to the Logitech gaming software and at v45.7.
External sound card (Sound Blaster X-Fi HD) was updated to the latest version from the official website. This didn't change a thing.

Then I ran SFC and had the following result:

The PSU now is 2 and a half years old so I would be very disappointed if it failed although I still have warranty. I can't test it though as I have no other power supply that is strong enough and I don't know anyone that has one.

The SSD is of the same age.

Here is the S.M.A.R.T report of it:

I am on the latest BIOS version (4801).

When I'm running Prime95 I can't see any difference to the random freezes I have all the time (usually twice a day when I run my PC the usual 12-13h). When I run GTA 5 it usually happens within 15-30 min.

I haven't changed anything during the last 6 months. Back then I upgraded to the GTX 1080. The first freezes happened about 4 months ago and they became more frequent over time. I first suspected the GTX 1080 and changed back to my older GTX 780 (about 10 months old). But as I already told in this thread this made no difference.

My thoughts are beginning to side with Rich in that the power supply may be going bad. It's something that would cause an issue like this.

How does the system run without any video card installed? Any problems there?

When you ran Memtest, did you do it with all of the memory installed or one stick at a time?

#17 ·
At the moment I can't prove that it's faulty so if I'm wrong and the PSU is fine I will have to pay for the postage and maybe handling. Also I won't be able to use my PC at that time. So I decided to buy a new (not too expensive but still good) PSU primarily for testing and as a backup.

#19 ·
Today I received my new PSU and I installed it immediately. Then I tested my PC with GTA 5 and within a few minutes my system froze in the same way it always does. This should prove that my older PSU is fine.
Now there are only two major components left that I couldn't check that well. My motherboard and my CPU (maybe it's a very strange CPU fault...).
