Well, I'm done. And that ain't easy. Just got this new (to me) Optiplex 745 SFF desktop with ATI Radeon video card for dual monitors. Everytime the PC boots, Catalyst Control Center disappears and I must re-install the drivers. Then everything works fine, as long as I don't let the PC restart.

I have searched literally for a week or more and have found VERY little of help. One post somewhere said Windows was replacing the driver with a NEWER version automatically, but was zero help in convincing Windows to desist in this deplorable - and unwanted - action.

Any help you people can give would be greatly appreciated. And I would also like to say that I applaud you for your TOU! It is GREAT to find people who will stand up for their values!

System Info:
MS Windows XP Pro SP3 ver 5.1.2600
Pentium D 3.00gHz
4gb Ram
250gB HDD 140gB Free
Chipset Intel Q965 Express

Video Card
ATI Radeon X300/X500/X1050 Series
Driver Date 2/10/2010
Version 8.593.100.0
Installed Drivers ati2dvag.dll
Driver Version 6.14.10.6462
INF File oem13.inf (ati2mtag_RV380x section

If any further info is needed, you have but to ask.

Have you considered using the warranty?
What exact Graphics does your unit have?
Where are you getting the drivers that you are using to reinstall?

Thanks for the reply, Tyree.
1.) THANK YOU for your service to our country, and WELCOME HOME!

2.) There is NO warranty on the card as the entire system was purchased used from a reputable dealer. However, HE assures me the problem is NOT in the card. I agree with that MAINLY because I see SO much on the net about this same problem.

3.)Here is the information taken directly from the card by visual inspection:

4.) Here is driver info pulled from Windoze:

5.) I got the driver from ATI.
Installed their automatic ident software, and their system told me the only driver available for this card was the X300/X550/X1050. So I D/L'd that and installed. It works superbly, but whenever the system is shut down and rebooted, Catalyst Control Center tells me there is no card installed. I reinstall the driver and everything works. (I keep a copy of the driver in a hidden folder, renamed, so Windoze can't find it and mess with it.)

6.) Perhaps I should also mention that the machine is a Dell Optiplex 745 SFF. I seem to have neglected to mention that earlier.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Tom

Did the reputable dealer give you any insight to what they thought the problem may be?
I have a concern with your info as it is showing two (one ATI & one Nvidia) GPU's.
ATI RADEON PCI-EXPRESS
102A6290800 128MB VIDEO CARD

NVIDIA P73 VIDEO CARD TS-M-8V01C
CN-OG9184-67902-69T-0552

Are there two GPU's installed?

1.) Apologies for delay. Had to be out of town w/o computer.
2.) Apologies for confusion. That info about the NVIDIA card was written on the same note as the Radeon info, but was for a client.
3.) SOME progress, I guess. I went through:
Device Manager|Display Adapters|ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series
Properties|Driver|Driver Details and found there are SEVEN differences between the two states of this problem, i.e. immediately after a reboot when the system cannot "see" the adapter, and AFTER the re-install of CCC. SO...I am thinking Windows is changing these files for some reason beyond my kin. Do YOU have any clues?? And WHAT can I do to stop this March Hare? Files listing follows....hhhmmm, your system is removing my formatting, so the list is difficult to read, but do-able.

Well, perhaps "reputable" is too strong a word. I have quite a few friends who have bought from this guy. He does have a storefront, but he deals only in used gear. Off lease, refurbs, etc. Everyone says he stands behind his product and he gave me a written 30 day guarantee. Unfortunately, I let that 30 days get away from me for several reasons....1.) I am the caretaker for a 100% disabled vet and that duty alone keeps me very busy, sometimes for days at a time. and 2.) I did not (DO not) believe it to be the GPU at fault. Which would put it outside the realm of his warranty under ANY circumstance.

The largest problem is he is nearly a hundred miles away from me. I called him and he says he does not think the problem is in the card. I agree with that, so do all of my IT friends with whom I have discussed this. (Several of these guys are seriously world renowned in their field.)

While the problem may be unusual, it is certainly NOT rare. As I said earlier, there are MANY posts about this same type of event in many forums similar to this. I searched those out and found no answers. After browsing through THIS forum for a while, I decided that you guys seem to have a really good grip on things and decided to post my request here.

As I mentioned in this mornings post, there is only ONE GPU, the ATI Radeon. The NVidia info was a stupid late-night mistake on my part. Also, as I said this morning, I believe we now have an important CLUE about the origin of this problem - the fact that after a boot, there are 7 changes to the driver files.

The question remains - WHY are these changes taking place. Is Windows doing something hinkey here?

Thanks for your patience with me Tyree, and Happy New Year to you and yours.
Tom

What exact Model Number is the GPU?
Where are you getting the drivers?
