Hi, I purchased an XFX 7970 Black Edition a week or two ago and since I've had it, the performance in small windowed games is fairly poor and the performance in big fullscreen games (Crysis 2, Skyrim etc) is hardly better than my 6970's performance.

So, intrigued, I looked at Dxdiag and saw that the approx total memory was 734MB.... This is a 3GB graphics card that would share with the RAM. I think my 6970 had around 7.5GB for approx total memory and that's a 2GB card. I was expecting at least that for this card.

The drivers are pre-certified by MS but surely they won't be that dodgy? How can I fix this and is it possible that the card is not working properly and needs replacing?

Note: after typing this - using my investigative mind - I saved the file from dxdiag and looked at that. It shows that it's 3GB but only 734MB... Here's the display devices section:

Sorry, that should be in my sig... Why isn't it? Anyways:

Here's the rest of the dxdiag file. You can find all the detailed info you need.

Here's the simplified version:

Asus P6X58D-E
Intel Core i7 950 @ 3.84GHz
Corsair XMS3 DDR3 12GB (6x2GB)
XFX Radeon HD 7970 Black Edition Factory OC 1000MHz
Crucial M4 SSD 128GB
Corsair TX650W
Think that's most of it... Meh, anything else you need should be below if I missed it.

In terms of performance It's not uncommon to notice little to no difference.

People forget that when you upgrade from a high end card , to ANOTHER high end card , you don't see the same speed difference as you do when you go from low end to high end. The only people that should be buying 7900 series gpus are people that do not already have a high end gpu.

As for the memory not reading correctly , the board has had alot of bios updates since it was released 2 years ago so you may want to look into that.

I think I've got the latest. I certainly updated less than a year ago! Will have a look at BIOS updates later, and I know that the performance isn't going to be much more, but it CERTAINLY shouldn't be less... And it is so something is wrong.

I should maybe have quoted figures: On terraria I get 55fps. On Crysis 2 on high (which is low) I'm getting around 35-40 fps. I'm not sure what fps I got on terraria with the 6970, but certainly the Crysis 2 fps was the same.

Was not aware it was LESS but rather "hardly better".

Considering the gpu is so new the drivers aren't very good for it yet which alone could be the problem.

Wouldn't hurt to check your cpu usage though during these games. Try running them with everything possible closed. Browsers , messengers , antivirus programs , even explorer , just to see if anything is dragging the game down. If your using mcafee or norton that would definitely cause a huge problem.

Haha. Mcafee? Norton?! Are you mad?! I don't have that! I don't actually have any anti-virus atm as I've raged at them slowing my computer down too much.

And CPU usage isn't being stupid or anything either.

I admit I said 'hardly better' but 55fps in terraria? That's not normal. And most games don't feel smooth. I may reformat Windows to see if there's something iffy on it, but I really can't be bothered to do that atm.

My assumption is that it HAS to be something to do with the drivers. Or their compatibility with my exact computer setup.

Ok... Now I'm confused. I've just reformatted and I've only got one screen plugged in at the moment. My dxdiag is showing exactly the same. 734MB approx. total memory. There's something not quite right there! Any ideas anyone?

I've not installed any drivers or programs other than the GPUs, just changed some power settings. What's causing this to only have 734MB of memory!?

I have this same xfx 7970 and I can try to help as much as I can! I had thought as well that this card didnt perform as well as I thought it should but I can max crysis2 and bf3 (other than aa) without no issues!

It seems to perform as well as I expect on most games, but any little games like terraria and some of the freetoplay ones on steam seem to run really slowly (I mean, 45fps in Terraria with the BEST single GPU card is a little iffy considering I get around 100fps on Just Cause 2 at max with full AA etc at 1080P. Not much lower at 3240x1920 without AA actually. Lol). New drivers are out now too so I'll have to test.

After a little more research, I have discovered that the 734MB VRAM in dxdiag is an issue with dxdiag itself and the way it works. It has something to do with 1GB or more of VRAM and 4GB or more system RAM. If it shows 734MB in dxdiag, or some small number under 3GB, ignore it, as long as it registers 3GB dedicated in GPU-z or something, you're fine!

Yeah. Shamefully, my old computer with a 5830 whilst recording can run BF3 at 30fps+ constantly at 1080P ultra (without AA and motion blur) and this one can't handle it at all well. Approx 20fps most of the time. I am running 3 screens though. Haha. When my HDMI cable arrives I'll be able to plug yet another monitor in and run it on a single screen. Hypothetically, at 60fps? Haha.

Yes as well as mine on a 27 inch the fps does bounce around alot...but if I turn aa off and everything else to ultra...it seems to run awesome lol..

Is that at 2560x1440?

Interestingly, (I found this in the Beta too) if you set everything to absolute minimum, it's about 5fps lower than everything on ultra...!?
