Windows Vista - Black Screen

I've recently had a problem with my PC, it boots up normally but when it reaches the Login Screen i type the password and all that jazz and bang everything is black , i can only see the mouse cursor nothing seems to be running

I've tried going into safe mode - same problem
tried system recovery when booting up - same problem

NEED HELP
