Windows 7 upgrade on XP & HDD upgrade

What's the best sequence to do this? Should I clone the present HDD to a new larger one then go through the W7 custom/clean upgrade? Or, perhaps I can just do a Windows Easy Transfer to an external drive, swap the new HDD into the machine, boot from the W7 DVD, and install to the new drive?

This is a Compaque Presario desktop about 5 years old running XP home premium.

Hi -

Be sure to run Windows 7 upgrade advisor --> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor

Info on XP --> Windows 7 -

Easy Transfer OK, but I would be sure to copy out vital files individually (by folder) to external USB drive to assure that you can access them again on any system. Boot into SAFEMODE to copy files out - faster.

I would advise that you reinstall XP on new HDD, then run Windows 7 upgrade.
