I'm having a problem with my Dell desktop computer locking up and the monitor displaying rows of 99's across the screen. I have to "CTRL + Alt + Del" to reboot. Sometimes it will reboot normally, other times it will go back to the 99's screen. I have gone into CMOS after this happens and CMOS doesn't recognize my C drive hard drive, making me believe my C drive hard drive is failing. If I leave the computer off for several minutes, I can boot normally. Any thoughts, ideas????
You have a stuck key on your keyboard. Turn the keyboard over, and shake it, then blow it out with a can of compressed air to remove any food particles and or dust.
Try a different Keyboard.
Boot into Setup by pressing F2 (CMOS)
Under System Information, it should list your HDD. If not, then shut down, open the case and make sure the Data and the Power Plug are plugged in firmly to the back of the HDD. Make sure the Data cable is plugged in firmly to the Motherboard. Take note of which SATA port by the markings on the board, that the Data cable is plugged into. Boot back into Setup (Bios) and make sure that the SATA port on the motherboard is Enabled. Save and Exit.
If you still have problems, try replacing the Data cable, try a different power plug from the PSU, try a different SATA port on the Motherboard.
You can also restart the computer and press F12 at bootup and run the Dell Diagnostics.
When it does it, its 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99, etc. if it was a stuck key, it would be more like 999999999999. I will check the HD cable and verify the locations as you recommended. Thanks
Spunk Funk, I did everything you recommended and ran the Dell diagnostic program several times. I received error code 2000-0146 several times on my drive 0. I checked the Dell error codes and it indicates a HD failure. I ran the diagnostic program again after disconnecting the drive from the MB and the diagnostic program came up clean. Luckily, this is a secondary 1TB drive I use for back ups and storage. I have ordered another drive to replace it. Once the new drive comes in and installed, I'll run the diagnostic program again. Thanks
It sounds like you found the problem and the diagnostic should come up clean after installing the new drive.
