My System

Hi,

I would like to know how it is possible to determine which process is locking a file.

I tried activating the auditing on the file as a file system object, but to go check the process which last accessed my file is frustrating because there are literally thousands of entry in event log and, at the end, the audit doesn't tell me if the process which accessed the file is effectively the one that is still locking it.

Maybe I should use an utility, but which one?

Someone could help me?

Which file is locked?
There is a good chance that it is a prog file for some prog that you have that is keeping it locked.
Possibly knowing the file name will help us tell you more.

The file is NTUSER.DAT. The effect is that I cannot log on into my profile but the system makes a temporary profile to log me on.

In the event log I got this error.

Log Name: Application
Source: Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service
Date: 29/09/2009 1.53.56
Event ID: 1508
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords:
User: SYSTEM
Computer: MYPC
Description:
Windows was unable to load the registry. This problem is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.

DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
for C:\Users\User1\ntuser.dat

I tried with other posts in this forum and in Technet Forum to understand what's happening and now I'm looking to the problem in another perspective to understand how get rid of it.

Hi NTUSER.Dat should not be tampered with it is connected to your registry
