Vista wont downlad updates

Hi

We bought my daughter a Sony Vaio VGN-AR61E with Vista Home Premium installed.

It was setup to download and install vista updates automatically and everything was going well, until she pointed out that everytime she logged on it was trying to install updates.

I manually ran windows update to recieve the error message 'Errors found: Code 8000FFFF Windows Update Encountered an Unknown Error'. I have googled this code and cant seem to find anything usefull.

I checked the ReportingEvents file in the SoftwareDistrubution file and this shows that Vista Service Pack 1 was installed on 18th Jan 2009 and since then all other updates have failed with the ReportingEvents file showing:

'SelfUpdate Failure Software Synchronization Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x8000ffff'

I have tried unistalling SP1 using the uninstall windows update options, but that fails and I have also tried restoring to a restore point before the SP1 installation, but that also fails.

The laptop is working fine, but just very annoyed and frustrated that it is no longer recieving and installing updates :upset:

Hopefully someone out there will know how to fix this :grin:

Hi, first go to start search and type services.msc locate windows update right click select properties and disable it. Then go to start right click on the icon and select explore. Navigate to the software distribution file and expand delete ALL content in the right payne. Now go to start accessories and right click on "command prompt select "run as administrator" at the command prompt type :-

Code:
C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml C:\windows\winsxs\pending.old.xml   press enter
C:\windows\winsxs\cleanup.xml -> C:\windows\winsxs\cleanup.old.xml press enter

Do not worry if the second command appears not to complete
Reboot the computer go back to services.msc and set automatic updates back to automatic. Go to windows updates and see how you go.
