I had lots of problems with Vista home premium on my Sony Vaio laptop. The recovery disc that I burned when I bought computer did not work for recovery but it did work to instllation of drivers and softwares. So that I got copy of vista business edition and I loded that on my computer and now most of the hardware do not work (battery, webcam etc..). What can I do here. Can I get back to home premium somehow (how?) and should I buy recovery disc from Sony. Is there any other option to recover my system?

Well, to recover your important files, please follow this procedure:
Recover 'USER' files from dead vista install

Then, you can reformat your hard disk, and install the OS of your choice.

Then, use Ubuntu Linux to put your 'rescued' files back under 'C:\Users\<YourUserName>\'

I have done this for my customers many times (I am an OEM of custom-built computer systems), and it has always worked for me.

I hope this helps,

I have all data back up now. But my recovery CD is not working to recover vista home premium. On top of that I installed vista business so that many of the hardware do not work. I am not a computer savvy person. What is best way to get back on my feet? Get recovery disc from OEM or is there any way to get back to original factory settings? Can I do that eventhough I have vista business now on my computer?

Thanks for your help.

You can see if you have a recovery partition. Go to start/control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management and see if you have an unknown partition of about 10GB. If you do, reboot and press f10 or f12 to get to recovery.

Since you have all of your data backed up, you can do a 'full installation' of Windows Vista, which will start with a reformat ('wipe') of your hard disk.

I would recommend, however, that you should upgrade to Windows 7. This is the perfect opportunity, because:
- All of your data is backed up
- You are going to reformat ('wipe') your hard disk
- Windows 7 is very good at 'automatically' finding good, working drivers for all of the hardware in your laptop

This (installing Windows 7 instead of Vista) is what I recommend to all of my customers, because in the mid-to-long term, they will save a lot of money in 'service and support costs', because Windows 7 has (in my own personal experience, anyway) vastly lower 'service and support costs' than Windows Vista does.

Even if you did manage to get Vista working again, it would be, in my opinion, a Pyrrhic victory, at best.

I hope this helps,
