My AVAST tells me that these two are out of date, which is likely true, but when I try to update, they both fail for error 1603, 2203 or because the "database cannot be opened"
I don't know what any of that means.
I tried from Firefox, and IE with the same result.
I tried to remove them via control panel, and failed.
What is the trick? An obligation to accept ASK as browser and search engine?
Flash Player must be installed in both browsers separately. How are you updating? You should only update from their prospective web sites. https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/java.com: Java + You or their automatic updaters. You can also click the Java and Flash Player icons in the Control Panel (Not Programs and Features) to update
You do not need to check to install the optional software (eg) Ask Toolbar etc
First, verify your Java version, if older it will remove it Verify Java Version
You can also use the Flash Player Uninstaller to remove Flash Player and then you can reinstall: http://download.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player.exe
MS Fix IT ran and ran on reader XI, attempting to resolve....
It said it fixed the problem, but the new reader would not install because JavaScript is not enabled. This machine does not have NoScript, and Java isn't there yet.
MS Fix It would not let me start over on Java, and Java won't install, error 1603.

There was no java plug in. There is on my other machine.
I went to add on manager searched for Java, found, and added
Java script deobfuscator and
Quick Java,
both are extensions not plug ins.
Used MS Fixit to remove Java 8-31,
Installation of 8-45 failed due to error 1603
The error code 1603 is often associated with a download problem when trying to install a program from Adobe and Java. Maybe you could give the offline installers a try and see how it goes.
From your log, I can see that you still have Adobe Flash Player 16 ActiveX, Adobe Flash Player 17 NAPI and Java 8 Update 31 installed. Did you give the offline installers for Java a try?
Also yes, avast! often targets MiniToolBox as malicious, but it's a false positive.
Can you please try the offline installer for Java? Keep in mind that if you use Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or any other 32-bit web browsers, you need to download the 32-bit version. As for Google Chrome 64-bits, Waterfox, etc. you need the 64-bit version.
I used the offline installer for ver 8-45 on the original USER ID and failed, twice, error 1603, with avast disabled.
Same result on a different, rarely used. USERID
One Java site kept telling me to use ver 7-79 so I tried on the new ID. It worked, but I see no way to update it, or change the update schedule. JAva deployment now show up as a plug in on FF.
Tried again the get Adobe Reader DC, which appears to be the latest version. Installation failed because " a newer version is installed".
Reader XI show sup in program files, but not in CP>P&F. There is an acrobat.com and "adobe air" in CP>P&F.
We can try something. We'll grab the UninstallString values for every Adobe programs and Java installed on your system, and use them to proceed to the uninstalls. Follow the instructions below please.
Registry - Export Uninstall Keys
On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
Enter the following commands, one after the other. You'll know when you're ready to input the next command when a new line with a blinking cursor will appear under the precedent one: Note: You can copy and paste these commands instead of typing them. To copy a command inside the command prompt, move your mouse over the blinking cursor, right-click and select Paste. You must have copied the command prior to that (via Ctrl + C or left-click and Copy).
Once you're done running the commands, two files will have appeared on your desktop:
hklm_uninstall32.txt
hklm_uninstall64.txt
Create a new folder on your Desktop and move both files inside it. Once done, archive (.zip) the folder (right-click on it, select Send to... and select Compressed archive (.zip));
Go on ge.tt, upload the archive (.zip) there and give me the download URL in your next reply;
