Updateing On Vista Home Premium!?

I recently tried to download & install the newest security updates for Vista. I believe there were 7 total. 6 of 7 installed properly but the 7th "KB938123" failed to install and provided this error "c0000161". I also took a look at the windows update log and found this error "0x8024000c" I followed the suggestions from the help icon once the install error occurred. But I'm still unable to DL & install that update? Any suggestions?

P.S. I'm a new member as well nice to meet everyone!

Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt

I haven't seen a workaround just yet ---that's a fairly recent update (it's supposed to close Security issues with some of the Vista Sidebar Gadgets [mainly the RSS feed gadget and Weather gadget). I wouldn't be surprised if you simply gave it a day or two, let Microsoft figure out a better version of the patch, and tried again (they often update the versions of the patches fairly quickly if glitches are found).

Another approach that sometimes works is to download the patch manually, and try installing it yourself. If you have the 32-bit version of Vista, here's the download page for that update --- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...loads/details.aspx?FamilyId=49a5bd84-da71-4529-b4d3-ac57dab59e01&displaylang=en

Best of luck

P.S. ... make sure to be logged in with administrative rights when you install the update.

Are you logged in as an administrator or are you on a different account? The only thing I can think of that has worked for me with Vista issues is to either disable account control (can be done in the control panel\user accounts window) or to save the file, then right click->properties->compatibility tab and check the run as administrator box. You can also try checking the compatibility box for Windows XP SP2. That works for me for some things that aren't vista compatible like my wireless card.

Hi again

Just to make sure -- it isn't listed as "installed" in the Vista version of Add/Remove Programs is it? (in "Programs and Features")

If it is, try uninstalling it from there. If it is still listed after attempting to uninstall it from there, try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (I think it can uninstall updates, but I haven't used it in a while -- it won't hurt to take a look) --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Then try installing it manually from the direct-download. If you had any "download manager" programs active when you downloaded it last time, try disabling them first this time, and get a fresh download.

Also, check in the EventViewer logs (in Administrative Tools in Control Panel) to see if any errors or warnings in the logs coincide with the timing of the past failed updates --- that can yield clues.

Best of luck
. . . Gary
