Sony Vaio restore to a new Hard Disc

I have recently had a new HDD fitted following a hardware failure. The recovery partition has been successfully cloned from the old drive. Fortunately I had taken a full PC backup to a Western Digital external drive prior to the failure. I have tried all options under F8 during the boot cycle to restore my system but with no success. Can anyone help?

My laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-TZ31WN/B

F8 does not provide an option to perform a factory recovery since F8 is just a list of advanced startup options for Windows which all Windows computers have.

For Sony Vaio models the key to press to access factory recovery is usually F10.

I have tried the F10 options but the backup is either not recognised or it says it needs to initialise disc E and then exits
