[SOLVED] Reliability monitor problem

Hi there!

I'm having a small but annoying problem with Vista (business)'s reliability monitor. Every day since one day in August last year it relists about 50 programs as having an "application configuration change", often with several duplicates (there's always the same number of duplicates for all of the programs).

It doesn't seem to be related to any other crashes or installs listed there, and some of the programs it lists, I haven't used for months.

I've tried moving the files out of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\RAC\... where the reliability logs are kept, and that clears all the previous entries, but each day it still adds the 50 application changes.

I've scanned several times for viruses and spyware with a few different scanners, but have never found anything. I'm a bit stumped as to how to fix it, and if it could be caused by a larger problem I haven't noticed yet or something.

Well if anyone has any suggestions, it'd be much appreciated! If any other system info would help, just ask.

Re: Reliability monitor problem

What type of programs are listed repeatedly?

Have you gone into the Event Viewer to see if these programs are actually running each day then bombing?

My 1st guess is that the programs in question are in fact executing via the system registry and/or by the Task Scheduler.

How many induvidual programs are there out of the 50?

Re: Reliability monitor problem

Well, I mean there's 50 separate programs that list. Today each of these were all listed 4 times each:

Code:
7-Zip 4.42
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Software Update
BBC iPlayer Download Manager
Bluetooth Software
Broadcom Management Programs
Crysis(R) SP Demo
Dell Support Center
Dell System Customisation Wizard
DellSupport

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
Microsoft C__ 2005 Redistributable

Roxio Express Labeler
Roxio MyDVD DE
Roxio Update Manager
Sibelius 5 Demo
Sibelius Scorch
Sonic Activation Module
Steam
Tiscali Internet
Windows Live Messenger
iTunes
And that's pretty much what it's like every day. None of them are errors or installs, just an "application configuration change". I've been through the startup programs lists, and most of these aren't even run.

Success with the event viewer, though. After poking around in it for a while, I found that the Windows Installer service was the one "reconfiguring" all the programs each day with an eventid of 1035. A quick google for that seems to show that it was Dell Support Center that was causing it. No idea why though.

Much thanks for your help!

Re: Reliability monitor problem

Hi Chris. . .

A return call just came in on this a short while ago from a collegue and was told that it apparantly does have something to do with the Dell Support Center. She said that she un-installed the Dell Support Center and 99% of the items, similar to those you listed, went away. I don't know if this is something that you want to do or not, but I must ask - did you utililize the Dell Support Center when trying to solve this issue?

Re: Reliability monitor problem

Hi

Yep, I uninstalled Dell Support Center and the problem seems to have disappeared.

I didn't really use it anyway except for a quick link to the driver updates web page. And I didn't use it to try and solve this problem, though I did have a look through Dell's support website.

I think I'll be quite fine without it, so all's well here now! Thanks again.

Hi Chris. . .

I am glad that a solution was possible. Should this change, please post again as the cumulative nature of knowledge will help the next person seeking an answer.

I was just curious about Dell Support - I've only emailed Fujitsu one time and called Sony once - both with disappointing results. I've never had to contact HP/Compaq for my systems... yet.

I would keep te DVD/CD's that you have for the support site, though, just in case.
