Screen fades to black (while in use)

I only use this computer to play WoW.
At random intervals, the monitors will go black. But they will fade out, as if going to sleep, not just cut off. The sound cuts off about 10 seconds later.
No amount of button mashing makes it come back, not does pressing the power button, even though the computer is still powered on (not in sleep mode, the power light is solid)
I have checked power saving settings and I have it set to never go to sleep, and to never turn the monitors off. I have also disabled the screensaver.
I am using an external keyboard and mouse (it's a laptop hooked up to monitors)
What the hell is causing this????

Windows 7

Two external monitors, projector only mode (laptop screen disabled)

Both monitors are 60Hz, set at 60Hz in Windows

Battery and mains

Can you enable the laptop screen and see if the fade happens on the laptop screen at the same time as the external monitors ?

Re: Screen fades to black (while in use)

Okay I tried using it with the laptop lid cracked open, hasn't done it yet... I'll report back if it happens again. Thanks for your help.
