Poor video quality on laptop but good on TV?

Recently I got a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 15R with Nvidia GeForce GT 525M. When I play my videos on this laptop however the video quality is poor, it is blurry and pixellated and is worse than my old laptop, on which all my videos were perfect. I thought it might be a codec problem so I have installed pretty much every codec pack under the sun but there has been no difference, videos still look poor in VLC, WMP, WMPC and Windows Media Centre. I also updated the driver for my video card but this did nothing.
Today I plugged my laptop into my tv using a VGA cable and not only is the video quality on the TV excellent but the video quality on my laptop also became better while plugged into the tv (although the video became squashed into the middle), so I am thinking that the problem may be due to my resolution? I have tried all the resolutions for my laptop but none have made any difference when the video is played in full screen, the video does not look as good as when it was plugged into my tv.
Any help would be appreciated on this matter, what did my tv do to make my laptop's video quality better, how can I make videos appear better on my laptop?
Thanks

When you installed every codec under the sun... that drew a red flag for me. In my past experience some of those codecs (Shark007 to name one) can cause more problems and are not easily removed. I recommend reformating and reinstalling win7. Then install the latest graphics driver found on the manufacturer's website.

Now what format is the video in? If you are trying to play MKV's on win7, I followed this setup, except instead of using Gabest’s Matroska Splitters, I used Haali. Works perfect played thru windows media center, no need to download VLC, Media Player Classic Home Cinema or any other third party software. That little green button (Windows Media Center) is Awesome.
