OEM Win 7 VS Off the Shelf Win 7?

I have a question that perhaps you guys could answer. When a machine ships with an OEM version of an operating system (any machine, any OS), is it easy to change its operating system by buying a full off the shelf version of something other than what it shipped with and then do a clean install?

I am a pretty pragmatic person and in theory it should work, but I trying to look at this from a pragmatic perspective.

Are the hard drives imaged in the factory a certain way according to the chipset? Does it affect drivers, etc?

Thanks in advance.

I was just curious for future reference. I was under the impression that when a drive is imaged at the factory, it is not always easy to switch OS's (to go backwards from Win 7 to XP as an example) even if you do a clean install. Thanks by the way!

just be aware that if the computer is still under warranty, unless you purchased the new os from the computer manufacturer, you could violate the software warranty.

Also if you make a switch, you better make sure there are drivers available for that os. That is why a backward switch is not easy and may not always work.

My dad bought a laptop and it shipped with Win 7. He hates it and wants to roll it back to XP. He has a new printer and scanner that is only Win 7 compatible so drivers won't be available if we roll it back. I am going to insist he just stick with Win 7. It will be easier in the the long run. Thanks Rich, Sobeit and everyone else. I really find this forum incredibly useful, I appreciate the civilized responses to my last two posts and will be donating money tomorrow to the cause. Thanks again.

Youcan make win7 look and act much like XP . . Right click anywhere on the desktop and choose Personalize . . In Basic and High Contrast Themes, choose "Windows Classic" Most who use this cannot tell the difference between 7 and XP
