Need to access safe mode on a laptop with a broken screen

I need some files off an old laptop with a broken screen, but I don't remember the password so I've found some tricks to get into the account without a password via safe mode.
The problem of course is that in safe mode the laptop won't connect to an external monitor.
How can I get safe mode working on the external monitor?
Thank you.

Hi Mindwraith,

I recommend what jenae said as well. What is the brand/model of your computer may I ask? Assuming the hard drive has a SATA connector interface, take the hard drive out of the computer and connect it to a working computer via SATA-to-USB adapter. Here what a SATA-to-USB adapter looks like: Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter CB-ISATAU2 - Newegg.com

Then, once you connect the HDD onto a working computer and that computer detects the HDD, transfer your important files onto the working computer.

Hope everything works out well for you and feel free to ask more questions, thank you.
