MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

Good Day,

I had originally posted my problem in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware section, believing it to be that kind of problem. However, it was recommended that i bring it to this section as give a link to the thread as reference.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f100...ml#post2086244

Thank You !

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

I'd start with uninstalling the Windows Live stuff on your system (Start...Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program).

If that stops the message, then you can reinstall the Windows Live stuff if you'd like. If not, I'm sure we can recommend some better alternatives.

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

Are you trying to use this with Firefox? Maybe some sort of extension or add-on?
Could you describe the steps necessary to reproduce the error message?

In an effort to clarify and help you guys figure this out, this error message shows up with any program he tries to open.

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

No, i'm not trying to use it with firefox.

The error occurs whenever i i try to open anything !
I click to start Windows Live the error occurs.
I click to start Firefox the error occurs.
I click to start Photoshop the error occurs.

Only the header changes to the corresponding program that i'm trying to open, with the main message being:

C:\Windowsystem32\MSIMG32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

I explained it in the link i provided in the first post ....

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

Is this path accurate: C:\Windowsystem32\MSIMG32.dll
Or, is there a \ between Windows and System32?

Are you able to access the file (try renaming it to MSIMG32.bak)?
What are the properties of the file? Read-Only, Hidden, System, etc
What size is it, and what date was it created and modified on?

Since SFC.EXE didn't fix it, let's take a look at the SFC.EXE logfile to see what went on in there. Here's a link on how to do it: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928228 If you're not able to make any sense out of it, zip up the log file and upload it here for us to have a look at.

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

That path was a typo, usasma. This post lists all the locations/paths he has for the file

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

I figured as much (the same typo was in the other thread) - but I just wanted to be sure. :)

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

Ok i followed the instructions for the SFC Logfile.

Then went into C:\Windows\System32\sfcdetails.txt and the text file was empty with 0KB

Then went into C:\Windows\Logs\CBS (there are 2 files CBS and CBS.persist) I click on either of them and a message comes up saying that Access is Denied.

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

Yes please.

The second paragraph is just testing/information gathering.
The third paragraph (sfc log file) is needed to see why SFC didn't fix this.

I'm looking for 2 things here:
- a way to replace the .dll file with another, known good copy
- a way to make sfc.exe work properly and replace the .dll file on it's own.

As an aside here, I'm also wondering about the Windows Live Messenger. This is because it's not on my copy of Vista, and I've only got 3 locations for the .dll - and there's been a rash of problems with the Live stuff recently at my shop.

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

Right click on the cbs.log file (not the Persist one) and select Properties
Then click on the Security tab, then on the Advanced button
Then on the Owner tab, then on the Edit button
Left click on your user name, then click on the Apply button.
Then click on OK to exit all of the dialogs.

You should then have the necessary permissions to access the log file.

FWIW - I haven't messed with replacing system files in Vista, so we'll have to experiment a bit if I can't figure out why your SFC.EXE isn't working.

Is your Vista 32 bit or 64 bit? To find out, press the Windows key and the Pause/Break key at the same time. In the window that opens it'll tell you which one. I've got updated copies of both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions, so (if needs be) I can upload them for you.

BTW - If I don't reply within 2 days, please send me a PM. Some things are going on in my life that make my schedule pretty erratic.

Re: MSIMG32.dll - BAD IMAGE

Still not getting access to the log file after following your instructions ... this is really frustrating, thank you for helping me through all that you have going on though.

I have 64-bit
