Microsoft Security Essentials stops after launch

I have Windows 7 64 bit, and have been running Microsoft Security Essentials for months.
Yesterday, I got a message that Windows Security Center service would not start. Also, the tray icon for Microsoft Security Essentials disappeared from my system tray.
The Security Center Service message no longer appears, but I cannot get Microsoft Security Essentials to work. When I click to start the program, I see the startup screen, and then it immediately disappears, and its icon appears in red in my system tray. When I mounse over to it, it disappears.
I tried starting the service (services.msc) but I can't get the software to work.

Try uninstalling MSE, reboot, then reinstall it

I've done that twice alraedy; does not help.

Try Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems. Run it in advanced mode. After the unisnstall click next and it'll scan you drive and registry for parts that windows uninstaller leaves behind. Delete all traces it finds and reinstall. If the uninstall didn't get rid of the bad files then the reinstall will have the same problem. Post back if this doesn't help.
